The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Alliance (NATSIWA), in partnership with UQ Poche Centre for Indigenous Health and Monash University, is seeking health professionals and service providers to participate in a research yarn exploring pre-pregnancy health and care, infertility experiences and support pathways.

We welcome both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous health professionals and service providers working in primary care and reproductive health.

Interviews will take approximately 45 minutes and can be online or in person.

Your voice can help shape a stronger understanding and improve future healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

As we wrap up our 2026 Pathways to a PhD program, we celebrate the 17 participants who have spent the week exploring what research can look like for them, their communities and their futures.

We thank our speakers, facilitators and supporters for generously sharing their knowledge and experiences, and we look forward to following the journeys that emerge from this year's program.

The future of Indigenous research is in good hands.

What happens after a PhD?

As part of Day 2, Pathways participants heard from early career researchers who shared their experiences of building research careers, navigating opportunities and challenges, and staying connected to community while working in research.

These conversations help participants see the many possibilities that can emerge from higher degree research and the different pathways available beyond graduation.

A sincere thank you to Dr Condy Canuto, Dr Kate Thompson, Dr Jared Miles and Carl Francia for generously sharing your journeys, speaking openly about the challenges you've faced, and celebrating the successes you've achieved along the way.

This morning our Pathways to a PhD participants spent time exploring Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Governance with Dr Bobby Maher.

As research continues to grow in Indigenous spaces, questions around ownership, control and governance of data are increasingly important.

The session encouraged participants to think critically about how research can be conducted in ways that respect Indigenous rights, priorities and self-determination.

Day 1 of our Pathways program has wrapped up! One of the highlights was hearing from current PhD candidates about their research journeys.

Robbie Palm, Alice Melmeth and Amanda Sibosado shared their experiences of undertaking a PhD, the challenges they've navigated, and the opportunities that research has created.

What makes this session particularly special is that each of these researchers once sat where our participants are sitting this week, as participants in the Pathways to a PhD program.

Their journeys are a reminder that there is no single pathway into research, and that with the right support, today's participants can become tomorrow's research leaders.

Today we welcome 17 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants to our 5th annual Pathways to a PhD program.

Over the next three days, Mob from across Australia will come together to explore research pathways, learn what a PhD journey can look like, and connect with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers who are making a difference in their communities and beyond.

Pathways to a PhD was created to support Mob who are curious about research and interested in how higher degree research can be used to create positive change for our people, communities and futures.

The program is coordinated by A/Prof Judith Dean and Rebekah Hauiti and facilitated by Dr Stephen Harfield and Prof James Ward from the UQ Poche Centre for Indigenous Health and has become one of the Centre's most anticipated events each year.

We are incredibly grateful to the researchers, students and guest speakers who generously share their knowledge, and experiences throughout the week, helping participants gain a deeper understanding of what a research journey can look like.

We are excited for a week of learning, connection, yarns and new possibilities.

Today we mark Mabo Day, recognising the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, a proud Torres Strait Islander man from Mer Island, and the 1992 decision that rejected terra nullius and acknowledged the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country.

As an Aboriginal-led research centre, we reflect on the strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the importance of continuing this work, especially in closing the gap in health outcomes.

At the UQ Poche Centre, we are proud to support and grow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research leadership, because lasting change happens when research is led by and for community.
