How do you balance the demands of teaching and life outside the classroom? 💭
Teaching can be all-consuming, something I wish I had been more mindful of in my early years. For the first two to three years of my career, I truly let teaching take over my life. I poured everything into it, often at the expense of time, rest, and the parts of life that exist beyond the classroom.
And while that passion is something to be proud of, I’ve since learnt that balance isn’t something that just happens, it’s something we have to gently and intentionally create 🤎
In our Why I Teach April issue, I loved reading about Siobhan’s experience and the way she approaches balance outside the classroom. In her words of advice: “Don’t sweat the small stuff… we are all human and learning, and our students understand that too.”
I hope you enjoy reading her story as much as I did 💗
(also known to her students as Mrs Davis) is a passionate primary school teacher from New South Wales, currently in her sixth year of teaching. She brings warmth, joy, and connection into her classroom, creating a space where students feel seen, valued, and supported. Her story highlights the power of kindness, the importance of relationships, and the lasting impact a caring teacher can have on young lives.

Have you ever thought about the impact you’ve made?
Take a moment to truly reflect on all the students you’ve taught over your career, the years you’ve spent in the classroom, and the incredible number of lives that adds up to.
How many students have you influenced? How many minds have you inspired? How many hearts have you touched? As teachers, we rarely get to see the full impact we’ve had but it’s there, lasting in ways we may never know.
In our March issue of the Why I Teach campaign, we hear from Katelyn, a graduate teacher who was so inspired by her own teachers that she chose to become one herself. Her story is a beautiful reminder that, as teachers, we don’t always see it but the difference we make stays with our students forever.
I hope you enjoy reading her story as much as I did 💗
