In this video, Christina Bradley, Director of Training Packages Development | VET & Technical, shares a preview of the next tranche of UEE draft qualifications and skill sets opening for feedback from Monday.

The drafts cover emerging and high-demand workforce areas, including:

⚡ First Nations participation and engagement in clean energy projects
⚡ Rail signalling
⚡ Instrumentation and control
⚡ Systems integration
⚡ Electronics

This early review phase gives industry, employers, training providers and stakeholders the opportunity to help strengthen the drafts before they progress to formal public and government consultation.

Australia needs more skilled energy workers and more apprentices who make it through training.

Getting people into apprenticeships is only part of the challenge. We also need training that helps people build their skills, stay the course and enter the workforce ready for the job.

What should a career in system integration look like?

The proposed pathway being developed through the UEE Full Training Product Review creates a clearer progression:

Cert II → Cert III → Cert IV

Start with the foundations. Build capability through an apprenticeship. Then move into specialist smart home or commercial AV skills.

The proposed specialist pathways draw on work with CEDIA and AVIXA, connecting the Australian training pathway with established international industry frameworks.

Around 85% of electrotechnology apprenticeship cancellations happen within the first two years. That’s also when the maths involved in training becomes more demanding.

Numeracy isn’t the only reason apprentices leave. But the evidence raises an important question: are apprentices getting the support they need as training becomes harder?

Our homes, workplaces and communities are becoming more connected: Smart homes, energy management, commercial AV, assisted living, connected buildings.

Behind them is a workforce increasingly expected to understand not just individual technologies, but how they work together.

An energy apprenticeship starts long before the first day on the job.

The maths students learn at school can shape how ready they are for the technical demands of an electrical apprenticeship.

New evidence shows some students may be starting that journey with gaps in the numeracy skills they’ll need later—and those gaps can become harder to overcome as training gets more complex.

The energy workforce is growing. So why is workforce growth slowing? 🤔

The latest Workforce & Training Data Dashboard shows energy sector employment grew from 296,500 to 315,000 workers, yet the pace of growth continues to slow.

Demand for projects remains strong, but workforce supply pressures haven't gone away.
