Plant Profile #23 Chocolate Pudding Fruit

A little winter treat this year... 🍈
(Aka black sapote - Diospyros nigra)

🍫 Evergreen tree typically to about 6m
🍫 Adaptable over a wide range of soil conditions
🍫 Tolerant of dry periods once established
🍫 Generally able to cope with short periods of temps a few degrees below zero, but can be frost sensitive when young
🍫 Fruit usually ripens off tree - wait until skin blackened and fruit very soft to the touch
🍫 Taste is reminiscent of a kiddies chocolate snack yogurt, with a thick custard sort of consistency

My most established tree is a little perculiar in that the fruit both hold and fully ripen on tree (in the absence of strong winds). This makes for easy picking. Fruit pictured in tree here (with brown patch) is the same fruit cut open on the plate just minutes after picking. Had delicious fully-ripen chocolate pudding fruit flavour!!
