It's a National Union of Students Day of action, and the officer whose name sits on the poster, Yasmine Johnson, is a Socialist Alternative member and a national convenor of Students for Palestine.

Their paper Red Flag put the purpose in writing: orienting to the people "who can be organised into a larger socialist movement".

The organisers gave their own reason for the date. They called it a walkout "three months before the state election".

And protest isn't on Victoria's list of approved absences. The only thing making a school student's day off lawful is a note from a parent.
