In mid-June, several of our Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian senior group volunteered to complete a Homes set-up with our charity partner, RizeUp Australia.

RizeUp provides all the practical items needed for victim-survivors of family and domestic violence to make a fresh start, including furniture and other household items that help transform empty houses into homes.

When each of our GKR teams arrived at their location, they were greeted by a RizeUp driver, an empty house and a truck filled with flatpacks and homewares. The teams set about unloading the truck, assembling the flatpacks, making beds, filling pantries and carefully decorating the space. This included fitting out children’s bedrooms and providing them with the materials needed to start at a new school.

After 4+ hours of work at each location, the transformation from house to home left a lasting memory for all involved. With the knowledge that a family would be entering their newly furnished home in the coming days, each team member took comfort in knowing that they had helped create a new beginning for someone in need.

We are incredibly grateful to RizeUp for the work they do and for the opportunity to be involved in their Homes program. We also appreciate the amazing support shown by all of our students and instructors who participate in the Stop Domestic & Family Violence Purple Belt Campaign. Your involvement means a lot, not only to RizeUp and the families they help, but also to GKR Karate as a whole.

If you would like to volunteer with RizeUp to help setting up Homes, information can be found here https://www.rizeup.com.au/volunteer

The first four workshops are on this Sunday, 22nd Feb!

🥋 9:00am | Saifa
🥋 10:15am | Seiunchin
🥋 11:30am | Beginners Kumite (Sparring)
🥋 1:15pm | Black Belt Katas

Some common questions we’ve received:

❓ “If I don’t know the kata yet, as I’m still learning, can I attend?”
👍 Yes, absolutely! Each workshop is broken down move by move, so it’s suitable both for those learning, but also those looking to advance the finer details.

❓ “I’m not yet a XX belt. Can I still come?”
👍 Yes! The definitions (eg “black belt kata” and “Nidan+ kata”) are not to restrict people based on grade, it is to describe the content of the session so you know what will be covered.

❓ “Do I need sparring gear for the kumite workshops?”
👍 Yes, full protective equipment is required for your safety.

❓ “Do I have to be from Strathpine to come to these?”
👎 Not at all! These sessions are open to everyone regardless of where you usually train.

Big goals for this year? 🏆 Time to put in the work!

Join us at Strathpine Prime for a series of focused workshops covering specific Katas (Saifa, Bassai Dai, Empi & more) as well as Kumite drills for all levels.

You are welcome to attend these sessions no matter where your home dojo is. Check the flyer for the full schedule and see you there! 👊

LAST ONE! IT’S KUMITE TIME! 🥊

Tomorrow is the last of our special holiday workshops… and this time, it’s all things kumite!

This session is being run by Sensei Chris, one the National Squad Coaches for Queensland, and may also have a surprise visit from the current WORLD CHAMPION for Black Belt Open Kumite 🏆

This session:

🥊 Will be suitable for beginners who are keen to learn the basics. We know it can be nerve racking learning to spar, so come enjoy a less pressured environment to get the hang of it!
🥊 Also suitable to experienced students who wish to learn some new and advanced skills - time to learn something new!
🥊 Will cover both jiyu kumite (dojo/free sparring) and ippon kumite (tournament sparring), so no matter your interest there will be something for you.
🥊 Of course, for those who wish, we will also include some free rounds to enjoy a good kumite session after all the new year festivities!

Please ensure you have ALL kumite gear with you, as it is compulsory for safety:

🥊 Hand mitts
🥊 Shin guards
🥊 Mouth guard
🥊 Groin guard / chest guard

This class is open to ALL STUDENTS regardless of where you usually train. Location is at GKR Strathpine Prime: 2/363 Gympie Road, Strathpine.

See you tomorrow!

28/12/2025

Our next two kata workshops are coming up this Tuesday! Great way to break up the “what day is it” week between Christmas and New Years 😂

Open to everyone regardless of where you usually train. Suitable for those wanting to learn the kata or advance the kata - as we are braking down move by move.

Strathpine Prime: 2/363 Gympie Road, Strathpine

Even though our regular classes will be on break from this Sunday (resuming January 7 at most locations), we know some of you just can't wait until next year to get back on the mats. Join us at Strathpine Prime for our Special Holiday Workshops!

This is the perfect chance to refine your Kata or get some targeted sparring practice in before the new year officially kicks off.

Open to all students regardless of where you usually train.
