Kindy Butterfly Experience!! 🦋
Two weeks ago, Miss Shazzy and Miss Ang discovered a chrysalis hanging gently on a decorative cage in our garden. As our inquiry has been “If we have wings, can we fly?”, this felt like a magical and meaningful moment for our Kindy children. We carefully brought the decorative ornament and chrysalis inside and placed it near the window, creating a space for observation, wonder, and curiosity.
Each day, children patiently waited and watched, eagerly checking if the butterfly had emerged. We began researching together and discovered it could be a Common Crow butterfly. Children explored the butterfly life cycle and expressed their understanding by drawing it in our classroom floor book, proudly connecting their learning to the real experience.
On Tuesday, the moment we had all been waiting for finally arrived! The butterfly emerged from the chrysalis. The room filled with excitement and quiet anticipation as children observed closely as the butterfly held onto the side of the hanging ornament to let it’s wings dry.
After a group discussion between the children, it was decided to name the butterfly “Pie.” Stemming from one of Heidi’s “Dad jokes”, stating “It’s name is Pie, cuz its up-high!” Together, we watched as Pie spread its wings and flew out the window, a beautiful moment of growth, patience, and connection to nature.
This experience has deepened our children's curiosity about bugs and insects, with them now asking, “What do birds eat?” and “How many eggs do they lay?” We look forward to continuing these inquiries in Term 2 after the Easter break.
