The strongest contenders in government procurement aren’t just responding to tenders. They’re preparing before they’re released.

Three steps can make all the difference before the formal process begins:

1. Understand the agency’s goals
2. Attend forums, briefings and industry sessions
3. Pick up the phone and start a conversation

These small actions help build familiarity, credibility and confidence. Long before any proposal is written.

They’re often overlooked. But they’re a critical part of winning government work.

This approach is drawn from Winning Government Business by Thomas Po***ck.

One of the things we spend a lot of time working through with clients is getting clarity on the problem their business solves.

Most businesses naturally start by talking about what they do. A government buyer is usually asking a different question: What problem can this business help me solve?

We see businesses leading with:

"We manufacture..."
"We provide..."
"We deliver..."

There's nothing wrong with that, but it's only part of the story.

The businesses that make it easy for buyers to understand where they fit can clearly explain:

• the problem they solve
• who they solve it for
• why they're the right fit

That clarity flows through everything else. It shapes your capability statement, your website, and the conversations you have with buyers. Most importantly, it makes it much easier for someone to understand why they should engage with your business.

If someone has to work hard to figure out why they should engage with your business, you're making the decision harder than it needs to be.

Logan businesses, are you ready to supply to major projects?

In partnership with Logan City Council, Gov Ready is delivering a Major Project Readiness Program to help local businesses prepare for upcoming infrastructure and supply chain opportunities, including the Logan to Gold Coast Faster Rail and the Brisbane 2032 project pipeline.

Up to 40 Logan-based businesses will be supported through practical workshops, industry insight and direct engagement with Tier 1 contractors and major project supply chains.

This is a structured, outcomes-focused program for businesses serious about positioning for long-term supply chain opportunities.

Places are limited and demand is expected to be strong.

EOI’s close 20 March 2026. The Major Projects Readiness program commences in May with a commitment to attend 3 workshops, 1-on-1 meetings and a final supply chain networking event over 8 weeks.

With the start of the new year, here's a timely reminder of how the Queensland Government has been actively enhancing procurement policies to support local businesses and drive economic growth.

Key initiatives include:

- Q2032 Procurement Strategy: In anticipation of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the government has launched the Q2032 Procurement Strategy, outlining over $180 billion in procurement opportunities. This strategy emphasises sustainability, ethical standards, and diversity, aiming to create a "Team Queensland" business community.

- Buy Queensland Approach: This initiative prioritises Queensland jobs and increases opportunities for local SMEs to supply to the government. From 1 July 2022, all agencies must contribute to a collective 30% target of procurement spend by value from Queensland SMEs.

- Small Business Procurement Commitment: The government is committed to making it easier for small businesses to supply to the government and ensuring timely payments. Actions focus on building capability, faster payment processes, and supporting small business participation in procurement activities.

These initiatives reflect the government's dedication to fostering a thriving, resilient small business sector that supports local jobs and contributes to a strong economy across Queensland.
