Great lesson this morning at Wondall Heights dojo. We started by welcoming our new students Dave, Fletcher and Kathryn. We started with kicks and there was tremendous focus in the dojo. We were then treated to a self defense/bunkai lesson from Sensei Laurie. Once again outstanding lesson Sensei Laurie. See you all next week

We started our class by recognizing our amazing Karateka who competed in the tournament last Sunday. All had fantastic results, congratulations legends. We started with a cardio session on basics followed by kata. One thing very evident was we need to practice our lower grade katas. We graded Emily and Edward to orange tip congratulations you champions. See you all next week.

We started the class recognizing our newly graded students, fantastic to see them move forward with their journey. Sensei Xavier started the class with ladder drills with some very challenging combinations. We then broke the class up with green belts and below working with Sensei’s Scott and Xavier on gaining distance kumite drills and blue belts and above worked on evading an advancing opponent. We finished off with kumite and grade katas. Awesome training everyone

Yvonne started karate with her son to give him the confidence she missed as a child. 21 years later and in the midst of cancer treatment, the thought of returning to karate keeps her on track.

A little bit of something for everyone today.

Novel musical warmup from Sensei Dustin, a game to get us thinking about situational awareness, focus on hikite/blocks as strikes, Sensei Laurie expanded on situational awareness with a self defence reaction, the final 30 mins a showcase of kumite excellence from Sensei Dustin, and congrats to Andrew for attaining his yellow tip!

Whew, that left me as breathless as the warmup!

Wow, with our most capable and popular, instructor away, it was always going to be poorer for it this morning. Here’s wishing Sensei Alex a speedy recovery!
We celebrated karate-ka who graded last Sunday. Legs were burning early with a range of activities to work on reaction time and getting the heart rate up. We slowed the pace right down as Sensei Laurie tested minds and legs with sophisticated kicking drills, finishing off with kumite. Ken is one step closer to his next belt - congrats.
Expecting a drop off in numbers next Saturday and some Radox baths this arv😉 See you all then!

In mid-June, several of our Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian senior group volunteered to complete a Homes set-up with our charity partner, RizeUp Australia.

RizeUp provides all the practical items needed for victim-survivors of family and domestic violence to make a fresh start, including furniture and other household items that help transform empty houses into homes.

When each of our GKR teams arrived at their location, they were greeted by a RizeUp driver, an empty house and a truck filled with flatpacks and homewares. The teams set about unloading the truck, assembling the flatpacks, making beds, filling pantries and carefully decorating the space. This included fitting out children’s bedrooms and providing them with the materials needed to start at a new school.

After 4+ hours of work at each location, the transformation from house to home left a lasting memory for all involved. With the knowledge that a family would be entering their newly furnished home in the coming days, each team member took comfort in knowing that they had helped create a new beginning for someone in need.

We are incredibly grateful to RizeUp for the work they do and for the opportunity to be involved in their Homes program. We also appreciate the amazing support shown by all of our students and instructors who participate in the Stop Domestic & Family Violence Purple Belt Campaign. Your involvement means a lot, not only to RizeUp and the families they help, but also to GKR Karate as a whole.

If you would like to volunteer with RizeUp to help setting up Homes, information can be found here https://www.rizeup.com.au/volunteer
