Our Mother Duck Gaythorne community shared how they view children and we have created a beautiful graphic to display in our foyer. Our image of child is a simple reminded who is at the center of the work that we do and why.

As one year begins to draw to a close, families naturally start thinking about the next.

Children grow quickly in the early years. Their interests change, friendships deepen, confidence develops and, before we know it, they are ready for new experiences and challenges.

A new year brings change. But alongside that change, there is something equally important for young children: continuity, which gives these experiences time to deepen.

Katy Bloodworth shares how we believe curriculum is found in these everyday experiences—in children’s questions, relationships, play, conversations, discoveries and the ideas they return to.

The other week we had a a few dress up days for book week! The children and educators dressed up in some of our favourite book characters from some of the most memorable books. We also got to read many stories brought from home that linked to our dress ups which was a fun way to connect text and the wider world.

There is something quite special that happens when a child begins to truly know a place.

They know where their hat belongs. They recognise the morning rhythm. They know which educator will understand the look on their face when saying goodbye feels a little difficult. They return to the construction they started yesterday, continue a conversation with a friend, or pick up an idea that has been developing across several days.

Slowly, an early learning environment becomes their place.

Our Kindergarten graduating children have started their library visits where they visit our local library, borrow a book to take home, and bring it back the following fortnight to return and borrow another book. These excursions promote skills for prep such as responsibility, learning how the books are alphabetically categorised at the library, and a love for reading! 📖

At Mother Duck, we see every transition as an opportunity—not simply to move into a new room, but to grow in confidence, deepen relationships and strengthen a child’s sense of belonging.

As children develop, there comes a time when they are ready for new experiences, new challenges and new opportunities to learn. Moving into a new studio is one of these important milestones. While it is an exciting step, we also recognise that change can bring mixed emotions for children and families alike.

This year, our centre took time to learn and understand the value that our Acknowledgement of Country which was written by the 2023 Kindergarten cohort. We researched with the children why we have an Acknowledgement, who and what we are acknowledging. The Kindergarten children then assisted in documenting some aspects of our Acknowledgement of Country through mark making. This is now displayed in our foyer for all families and visitors to see - a display of our centre as a whole acknowledging the Turrbal people whose country we reside on.
