Speak Up for DLD
Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a hidden but common condition affecting about 1 in 14 children. It impacts a child's ability to understand and use language, which is crucial for learning, social interactions, and overall development.
Speech Pathologists play a vital role in supporting children with DLD. We can provide individualised interventions to help children improve their communication and literacy skills. Speech pathologists work closely with children to develop strategies for understanding and using language effectively, which can significantly enhance their academic and social success.
Teachers are equally important in supporting children with DLD. They create an inclusive classroom environment where children with DLD can thrive. Teachers adapt their teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of their students, using visual aids, simplified language, and repetition to help children with DLD understand and engage with the curriculum. By collaborating with speech pathologists, teachers can ensure that children with DLD receive the support they need both inside and outside the classroom.
Together, speech pathologists and teachers form a powerful team that can make a significant difference in the lives of children with DLD. Their combined efforts help children overcome language barriers, build confidence, and achieve their full potential.

Story Books to Support Children’s Language Development

Reading to children is a powerful tool for nurturing their language and communication skills. Storybooks not only ignite their imagination but also introduce them to new vocabulary, sentence structures, and concepts. One of my current favorites is “Where is the Green Sheep?” by Mem Fox. This delightful book engages young readers with its repetitive text and vibrant illustrations, making it perfect for developing early language skills. The search for the elusive green sheep keeps children intrigued, encouraging them to predict and participate in the story.

Books like “Where is the Green Sheep?” are invaluable for language development. They help children understand the rhythm and flow of language, improve their listening skills, and foster a love for reading. By asking questions about the story and encouraging children to describe what they see, we can further enhance their communication abilities. Let’s continue to explore and share the best storybooks that support our children’s growth and development. What are some of your favourite books for language development?
