Yesterday I had a bunch of appointments, so I left the house at about 8:30 am. I didn’t return until 4:30 pm. Rowan looked after everyone for us and here are the photos they took.

Every day, a Golden Retriever named Pippa waits for the same person to walk up her street in Brisbane, Australia: postman Martin Studer. She's been trained to take the mail directly from him and carry it back to her family, and by all accounts, it's the highlight of her day.

The problem was the days when there was nothing to hand her.

Studer had been on Pippa's delivery route for two to three years, and over that time, he'd come to understand exactly what those mail-less days meant for her. She'd still come bounding out to greet him, ready for her job, only to have nothing to actually carry home. Studer, by his own account, couldn't stand disappointing her. "I've always written something to her," he later told Bored Panda. "I just don't want to disappoint her! She loves the postie. It really makes her day when we come by."

So he started improvising. On days with no real mail for the household, Studer would take a small slip of paper, write "Mail For Pippa" across it, and hand it to her just like he would any other letter. Pippa, none the wiser, would happily carry it back to her family exactly the way she always did, tail wagging, job complete.

Studer shared the story on social media, and it spread quickly, racking up widespread likes and shares as people fell for the sheer simplicity of the gesture, a mail carrier going out of his way, letter by letter, just to make sure a dog's daily routine never felt incomplete. Word of Pippa's love for mail eventually reached far beyond her own street. After the story went viral, people from around the world began sending actual letters and postcards addressed directly to her, giving Studer plenty of real mail to deliver on the days he might otherwise have had to write another slip himself.

Reflecting on why the story resonated with so many people, Studer offered a simple explanation of his own. "It's good to break down that 'postie vs. dog' stereotype," he said, referring to the long-running, often adversarial relationship between mail carriers and dogs guarding their homes. Studer has continued sharing photos of the other dogs he meets along his route since, but by most accounts, Pippa remains his favorite.

For a job that comes with its fair share of genuine hazards from unfriendly dogs, Pippa's story flipped the script entirely, one postman deciding that a dog's small daily joy was worth the extra minute it took to write it down.
