2026 SARS Income Tax Filing Season – Key Dates and Important Changes
SARS has announced the filing dates for the 2026 Income Tax Filing Season:
Auto Assessments:
📅 1 July – 12 July 2026
Non-Provisional Individuals
📅 13 July – 23 October 2026
Provisional Taxpayers
📅 13 July 2026 – 22 January 2027
Trusts
📅 13 July 2026 – 22 January 2027
Auto Assessments:
Taxpayers selected for Auto Assessment will receive notification from SARS via SMS or email between 1 and 12 July 2026.
If you receive an Auto Assessment:
• Review the assessment carefully
• Verify all income, deductions, and tax information
• Ensure your banking and contact details are up to date
• Accept the assessment if all information is correct
Where information is incomplete or incorrect, an updated ITR12 must be submitted via eFiling or the SARS MobiApp.
Key Changes for the 2026 Filing Season:
SARS has introduced several enhancements to improve the filing experience:
• More pre-populated information on tax returns, including certain investment income
• Simplified questions and clearer wording on the ITR12
• Enhanced residency status questions and date fields
• Improved medical aid scheme selection through approved dropdown lists
• WhatsApp access to ITA34 assessments, Statements of Account, and supporting document uploads
• Refreshed eFiling interface with improved navigation and messaging
• New declaration alerts aimed at reducing verification delays
Important Reminder:
Although provisional taxpayers and trusts have a longer filing period, early preparation remains essential. Practitioners are encouraged to begin gathering information and supporting documentation as soon as possible to avoid delays, verification issues, and last-minute submissions.
Plan ahead, review Auto Assessments carefully, and ensure returns are submitted accurately and on time.

⁉️ Tax Practitioner Alert: Bitcoin Now Classified as Capital and Money
In the recent Mangundhla judgment, the Gauteng High Court held that Bitcoin constitutes both "money" and "capital" for South African exchange control purposes.
The ruling significantly strengthens SARB's position that transferring Bitcoin to offshore exchanges may constitute an export of capital and could therefore fall within South Africa's exchange control framework.
Practical implications for practitioners include:
• Increased scrutiny of crypto assets in AIT applications.
• Greater exchange control risk for crypto arbitrage transactions.
• Compliance implications for offshore wallet transfers.
• Compliance implications forcross-border crypto movements.
• Enhanced focus on crypto holdings, source of funds, and offshore exchanges by SARS, SARB, and Authorised Dealers.
While the judgment does not change the income tax treatment of crypto assets, it represents an important development in the regulation of cross-border crypto transactions and should be considered when advising clients on international transfers and crypto-related structures.
