📘 Grade 4 English Mini-Lesson: Passive Voice (Easy!)

Today we’re learning about the passive voice!

👉 We use the passive voice when the action is more important than who is doing it.

Active sentence:
The boy kicks the ball.

Passive sentence:
The ball is kicked by the boy.

💡 In passive sentences, we often use:
is / are / was / were + action word (past participle)

More examples:
🍰 The cake is eaten by Sam.
📚 The homework is done by the students.
🎨 The picture is painted by Mia.

📝 Try this:
Chan
ge this sentence to passive:
👉 “The dog chases the cat.”

💡 Answer:
👉 “The cat is chased by the dog.”

Keep practicing by changing active sentences into passive ones!

The "Mass & Volume" Challenge (Maths - Term 2)

Mass, volume and capacity are practical, real-life concepts. Parents can easily try this at home over the weekend.

🏠 Weekend Maths Lab! Let's get practical.

Grade 5 Maths in Term 2 is all about mass, volume and capacity (Converting grams to kilograms, milliliters to liters). This is where many kids lose marks in tests because it feels abstract.

Try this kitchen activity with your child this weekend:

1️⃣ Find a 1-liter bottle. How many cups of water does it take to fill it? ☕
2️⃣ Find 5 different items in your pantry. Estimate their mass (g) then check the label. Who was closest?
3️⃣ Challenge question: If a recipe needs 750ml of milk, but you only have a 250ml cup, how many times must you fill it?

Drop a comment and tell me: What did your child guess vs. what was the actual mass? 👇

(Need help explaining conversions simply? I have a few Term 2 slots open. DM me!)

📚 Grade 6 Natural Sciences Lesson Idea: Term 1 Topic 📚

Teachers and homeschoolers! Looking for a ready-to-go, hands-on lesson for your Grade 6 class? Here's a CAPS-aligned activity for Term 1, Topic: Photosynthesis (Strand: Life and Living).

🎯 Lesson Objectives: By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to:

1. Define photosynthesis.
2. Name the requirements for photosynthesis (sunlight, carbon dioxide, water, chlorophyll).
3. Name the products of photosynthesis (food/glucose, oxygen).
4. Explain why photosynthesis is important for plants and for us.

🕐 Time Allotment: 60 minutes

🛠️ You Will Need:

· Whiteboard/Chalkboard
· Textbook or diagrams of a plant
· Activity Sheet: A simple drawing of a plant with arrows pointing to the leaves (from the sun, air, and soil) and arrows pointing away from the leaves.
· Pencils and crayons/coloured pencils.

📝 Lesson Plan:

1. Introduction (10 mins) - The "Food Factory" Question

· Ask the class: "When you are hungry, you can go to the kitchen or the shop. Where does a plant get its food?" (Listen to their ideas).
· Explain that plants are incredible because they are food factories! They make their own food using a process called photosynthesis.

2. The Main Event (25 mins) - Breaking Down Photosynthesis

· Write "Photosynthesis" on the board. Break it down: "Photo" means light, "Synthesis" means to make.
· Use the diagram on the board. Explain the four key ingredients:
· Sunlight: The energy source.
· Carbon Dioxide: A gas from the air that enters through tiny holes in the leaves.
· Water: Absorbed from the soil by the roots and transported up the stem to the leaves.
· Chlorophyll: The green pigment in leaves that traps sunlight.
· Explain the two main products:
· Food (Glucose): The plant uses this for energy to grow.
· Oxygen: The gas we breathe out! This is released into the air through the leaves.

3. Hands-On Activity (20 mins) - Label the Plant Factory

· Hand out the activity sheet with the blank plant diagram.
· Instruct learners to draw and label:
· The sun sending energy to the leaf.
· Carbon dioxide (CO2) going into the leaf.
· Water coming up from the roots.
· A label for chlorophyll in the leaf.
· An arrow for oxygen (O2) coming out of the leaf.
· A label showing that food is made for the plant.
· Let them colour in their diagrams.

4. Conclusion (5 mins) - Why it Matters

· Ask the class: "What would happen if there was no sun?" (Photosynthesis would stop).
· Emphasise the big idea: Plants make their own food AND produce the oxygen we need to breathe. We need plants to survive!

💡 Teacher Tip: For homework, challenge learners to find a plant in their garden or neighbourhood and observe its leaves. Ask them to draw it and write one sentence about why that plant is important for life on Earth.

🧑‍🏫 GRADE 4 CAPS MATHS LESSON PLAN🧑‍🏫

🔢 Topic: Whole Numbers: Counting, Ordering, Comparing & Place Value (4-Digit Numbers)
📆 Term: 1 (Essential foundation work!)

Building strong number sense is the secret to maths success! This lesson covers the core Term 1 content for Grade 4 and is fully CAPS aligned .

1. 📋 LESSON DETAILS

· Subject: Mathematics
· Grade: 4
· Duration: 60 minutes
· Theme: Whole Numbers (Up to 4 digits)

2. 🎯 LESSON OBJECTIVES (By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to...)

· Identify the place value of each digit in a 4-digit number (thousands, hundreds, tens, ones).
· Count forwards and backwards in multiples of 10s, 100s, and 1 000s.
· Order numbers from smallest to biggest and biggest to smallest.
· Use the > (greater than) and < (less than) symbols correctly.

3. 💬 VOCABULARY

· Thousands
· Hundreds
· Tens
· Ones/Units
· Place value
· Digit
· Value
· Greater than (>)
· Less than ( and < symbols using the "crocodile eats the bigger number" analogy.
· Group/Pair Activity: Number Card Challenge (20 mins):
· Step 1: Give each pair a set of digit cards (0-9) or ask them to write digits on small pieces of paper.
· Step 2: Call out a 4-digit number (e.g., 2 456). Learners must arrange their cards to show the number.
· Step 3: Ask questions like: "Hold up the digit in the hundreds place!" (4). "What is the value of the 2?" (2 000).
· Step 4 (Ordering): Write 3 numbers on the board (e.g., 1 234, 987, 2 001). Ask learners to arrange their cards to show the numbers in ascending order (smallest to biggest).
· Step 5 (Comparing): Write two numbers on the board (e.g., 3 456 ___ 3 546). Learners hold up their cards to show the correct symbol (> or and < .
· Constantly link the digit back to its value. A "3" in the thousands place is not just a 3, it's 3 thousand!
· Use real-life examples like page numbers, house numbers, or distances to make it relevant.

---

📚 WHY THIS TOPIC MATTERS

Whole Numbers in Term 1 is the absolute foundation for EVERYTHING else:

· Place value is essential for addition and subtraction with carrying/borrowing.
· Ordering and comparing builds the logic needed for problem-solving and number patterns.
· Mastering this now makes fractions, multiplication, and division so much easier later in the year!

✏️ Grade 1 at Home: Let's Build a Sentence! ✏️

Learning to read and write is an adventure! Here’s a quick, fun activity aligned with the CAPS curriculum to help your little one understand sentence structure. It focuses on word order and punctuation.

The Goal: To show that a sentence is a complete idea that starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.

Activity: "The Mixed-Up Sentence"

1. You will need: A piece of paper, a pen, and scissors.
2. Prepare: On the paper, write a simple sentence. Then, cut out each word and the full stop separately. Example: "The cat is fat." (Cut out: The, cat, is, fat, . )
3. Play: Mix up the words and ask your child to arrange them in the correct order to make the sentence make sense. Encourage them to read the words aloud as they work.
4. Check: Once they have the words in order, ask them:
· "What is at the very beginning of the sentence?" (A capital letter)
· "What do we put at the very end?" (A full stop)
· "Does it make sense?"

Extend the Fun:
Let your child draw a picture to match the sentence! This helps with reading comprehension.

Give it a try and let us know how it goes in the comments! 👇
