📚How My Grade 10 Student Scored 97% on Her Exam Paper ✅️
🖋There is a widespread misconception about the role of a math tutor and how to use tutoring services effectively. Many students and parents believe that a tutor’s job is to teach new work or to go through entire practice papers with the student. In reality, the true value of a tutor lies in something much more powerful: refining existing knowledge and focusing on problem areas.
I want to share the success story of one of my Grade 10 students who recently scored 97% on her exam.
🖋In preparation for her exam, this student took the initiative to independently complete five full past papers — without my assistance. Each week, she would bring one completed paper to our session. Instead of spending time working through each question from scratch, we went through her answers together: identifying mistakes, clarifying concepts she found confusing, and focusing only on the areas where she struggled.
🖋By concentrating specifically on her weak points, we were able to use our limited time in a highly efficient way. We didn’t waste time on concepts she had already mastered — we sharpened her understanding exactly where it was needed most. The result? A major boost in her confidence and an outstanding exam score.
🖋Students who attend tutoring sessions expecting the tutor to provide work, go through questions line-by-line, and "teach" them the material are not using the service optimally. Precious time is wasted as the tutor must first work through exercises just to find where the student’s real difficulties lie.
🖋A tutor is NOT supposed to take over the role of the classroom teacher. A tutor is meant to act more like a COACH— helping students refine their skills, strengthen their problem areas, and perform at a higher level.
🖋If you really want to get the most out of tutoring, remember:
Do the work yourself first, identify where you are struggling, and use your tutor’s expertise to master those specific areas.
