MOSALA SYMPOSIUM 2026 DAY 1 🔥📚✊🏾

The Ujamaa Centre had the honour and privilege of hosting the 2026 Mosala Symposium in collaboration with University of South Africa and University of KwaZulu-Natal Department of Theology and Religion.

What a historic and intellectually rich gathering it has been! Imagine having two giants of African Biblical Hermeneutics in one room, Professor Itumeleng Mosala and Professor Gerald West 🔥🔥
A truly mind-blowing experience filled with critical reflection, liberation thought, and powerful conversations about theology, society, and contextual Bible study.

Day 1 opened with a warm welcome and a thought-provoking keynote address by Prof Sarojini Nadar on:
“Reflections on Gerald West’s Hermeneutics: From Black Theology of Liberation to Contextual Bible Study.”

The sessions that followed gave us deep and engaging reflections on the legacy and influence of Gerald West’s scholarship across African theology, liberation hermeneutics, and contextual Bible study. Scholars explored themes such as:

✨ Contextual Bible Study in the digital age
✨ Liberation hermeneutics and the “ordinary reader”
✨ African feminist perspectives on biblical interpretation
✨ Biblical interpretation within post-colonial African societies
✨ Community development and participatory biblical interpretation
✨ Anti-imperial readings of scripture and economic justice
✨ The enduring impact of Gerald West on African theological thought

The room was filled with scholars, students, church leaders, and community practitioners all engaging critically and passionately with questions of faith, justice, liberation, and African realities.

One of the major highlights of the day was witnessing the rich dialogue inspired by the lifelong contributions of Professors Mosala and West scholars whose work continues to shape theological discourse far beyond South Africa.

UJamaa team wishes every mother/ caregiver a happy mother’s day. Its not about the days you wake up happy and treat your kids best and give them all the best but it about the hard times you still wake up and give your kids the best, smiling behind all the scars and pain you going through just to show them a perfect picture of a mother’s love.

It not about all the expensive things you can afford and give them but the teachings you give them to help them sharpen their future for better. It about giving them support during their hard times.

We appreciate you for being brave enough to take care of your children even when you were not ready, even when you were alone, you still chose them.

As the UJamaa Body Theology program, we are proud to celebrate the success of the Q***r Awareness march led by Newcastle Prideful Legends. Although we were not present to participate in such a powerful moment of courage and community unity to raise voices about Q***r Rights, safety, and inclusivity, our hearts and solidarity were with you.
We are honored that the message of “IZITABANE ZINGABANTU” affirmed the dignity and humanity of our Q***r community and raised important conversations in the community. We highly appreciate everyone who participated in and organized this meaningful event. Moments like these remind us that justice grows stronger when communities stand together. We remain committed to supporting the ongoing work towards dignity, equality, and safety for all. 🌈🏳️‍🌈

Ujamaa Earth Theology Facilitated a CBS at the Climate Yes 2025 bootcamp. Under the theme reimagining dominion theology through the See Judge Act Method. Climate Yes is a Christian youth environmental movement with a global membership. It consists of Christians from different organizations and denominations . This years workshop had youth from South Africa 🇿🇦 Lesotho 🇱🇸 Eswatini 🇸🇿 Mozambique 🇲🇿 and Zimbabwe 🇿🇼.
