Dreams in Focus: Simphiwe Ndawonde’s Journey to Excellence.

On 02 July 2026, the spotlight shone brightly on Simphiwe Ndawonde, an inspiring 19-year-old senior boy at Pietermaritzburg Children's Home (PCH). Attending the prestigious Creative Arts College graduation ceremony held in Durban, Simphiwe officially received his Photography certificate.

He had a fun-filled day being accompanied by our regular donor Mrs. Shireen Singh and PCH Child and Youth Care Workers. This to Simphiwe meant the strong support system as PCH strives on maintaining that the care offered is not restricted to meeting fundamental needs but extends also to ensuring that children and youth’s achievement and recognised and celebrated.

Simphiwe’s graduation serves as an inspiration to all the children and youth at PCH that all their dreams are meaningful and within reach for as long as they put in the necessary dedication as he did.

PCH is excited to see what the future holds for Simphiwe and wish him all the best for his future endeavours, as he continues currently with his studies in 3D Animation.

Our Story on PMB Children’s Home continues…

After the demise of Miss Mary Cooke, Mrs Jeanne Mather was appointed as the first matron of the home. Her role was to continue rendering services to children of all denominations living up to the ideals of its founder. The home continued to service up to 25 children. A century later in 1986 the home expanded to cater for 30 children.

At that time there was in full-time employment the principal, 4 childcare workers, a social worker and some support staff. It included a part-time psychologist, remedial teacher and other support staff and volunteers. There were 5 host parents recruited at that time to support specific children.

A core priority (acknowledging that PCH was the oldest children’s home in KwaZulu-Natal), was to ensure that the staff were suitably trained to offer quality care services and ensure compliance with the Children’s Act. PCH proudly graduated their first recruits for training, with the Basic Qualifications in Child Care (BQCC) qualification offered by NACCW, in 1986

With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to our dear Tukelo, a bright soul who brought so much joy to our home. Though his time with us was far too short, his memory will forever remain in our hearts. We invite our community to join us in celebrating his life and honoring his beautiful spirit. Rest peacefully, sweet boy. 🕊️❤️

Pietermaritzburg Children’s Home was honoured to stand alongside nine other incredible charities as beneficiaries of the Oceans 8 Charity Swim fundraiser. Captured in this special moment, representatives from each organisation proudly received equal donation cheques, symbolising the spirit of unity, community support, and shared impact. The funds raised through this event will go a long way in supporting the care, development, and activities of our children, helping us continue to provide them with opportunities, stability, and hope for a brighter future.

This wonderful event not only brought communities together through sport and compassion, but it also created a meaningful impact in the lives of the children we care for every day.
