St John's DSG Old Girls This is the official page for the St John's D.S.G. Old Girls' Association in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The first A.G.M.

The St John's Old Girls' Association came into being in December, 1930, when a class of Matric girls, then called VI a’s, decided that they wanted some social link after leaving school. Elizabeth McDougall became the first Chairman and Myrle Simkins the first Secretary. took place in the School Library on May 10th, 1931 with Sister Mabel in the Chair.

It was wonderful to welcome two of our St John’s D.S.G. Old Girls back to St John’s D.S.G. for a special World of Work Day with the current Grade 11 girls.

Lindsay Du Plessis (née Carte, Class of 2002) shared her journey and experience in the hospitality industry, while Jackie Cameron (Class of 2000) gave the girls an insight into the exciting and fast-paced world of professional cheffing and culinary arts.

Having once walked the same corridors and sat in the same classrooms, it was particularly special for our girls to hear first-hand from St John’s D.S.G. Old Girls who have turned their passions into careers.

Thank you, Lindsay and Jackie, for returning to St John’s D.S.G. to share your experiences and inspire our Grade 11s as they start considering their own journeys beyond school. 💛

We’re proud to celebrate another of our wonderful St John’s D.S.G. Old Girls, Lauren Zunckle (née Sherwood, Class of 2019), founder and owner of Lil.attire.

Lauren has taken her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit and turned it into a beautiful brand bringing premium-quality, cute and fashionable clothing to little ones.

We love that Lil.attire is committed to supporting local manufacturers and suppliers, while using only the best fabrics for little people. Even the gorgeous prints have a story, each one starts as a watercolour painting before being printed onto 100% cotton fabric, creating something truly unique.

We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Taryn Patel (née Kirkwood, Class of 2003) back to St John’s D.S.G., this time with her husband and their three children!

There’s something rather wonderful about seeing our Old Girls return with the next generation and sharing a little piece of their St John’s D.S.G. story with their own families. 💛

We love celebrating the inspiring women who are making their mark in their communities and careers!

Meet St John’s D.S.G. Old Girl Sarah O’Reilly (née Akerman, Class of 2007), Manager and Curator of The Gallery at The Studios at Ballito Lifestyle Centre – as well as a wife and mum of two.

Sarah loves that no two days are the same: connecting with artists and visitors, discovering new perspectives, and seeing how art can spark emotion, conversation and new ways of thinking.

Her advice to younger women starting out? “Be authentically yourself, embrace what makes you different, build genuine relationships and always know your ‘why’.”

And the little thing that makes her day better? The cup of coffee her husband makes for her every morning.

We’re so proud to see our Old Girls building meaningful lives, following their passions and making a difference in their communities. 💛

It was wonderful to welcome back St John’s D.S.G. Old Girl, Ntando Dube, Head Girl of the Class of 2020, who returned to St John’s D.S.G. as a leader of one of our 2026 uHambo groups.

Ntando first experienced uHambo as a Grade 9 girl, back in 2017, and it is so special to see her return to share her experience, wisdom and leadership with our current girls.

uHambo is so much more than a journey through the mountains. It is an experience that challenges girls, develops leadership, builds resilience and creates strong bonds between them.

We love seeing our St John’s D.S.G. Old Girls give back to the school community that helped shape them. 💛
