The American Corner Pietermaritzburg, recently hosted an inspiring science workshop for 120 Grade 12 Physical Science learners and 6 Physical Science teachers, facilitated by Dr Derek Fish, a proud U.S. Government Alumni and Director of the University of Zululand Science Centre, a renowned educator and advocate for excellence in science and mathematics education.

The workshop formed part of the United States’ ongoing commitment to advancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and skills development. These are key priorities that support innovation, economic growth, and global competitiveness.

Through engaging, hands-on problem-solving activities and exam-focused strategies, Dr Fish helped learners strengthen their understanding of critical Physical Science concepts while building confidence in tackling complex scientific challenges. The session also emphasized the importance of analytical thinking, curiosity, and perseverance—skills essential for success in higher education and future STEM careers.

The American Corner Pietermaritzburg continues to serve as a hub for educational exchange and opportunity, connecting young people to global knowledge networks and U.S. Government-supported programs that promote academic excellence and innovation.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Dr Derek Fish for his expertise and dedication, and to all participating learners and teachers for their enthusiasm and commitment to learning.

🇺🇸 Investing in STEM. Empowering future innovators. Building global opportunity.

As we commemorate Mandela Month and celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence, the American Corner Pietermaritzburg, in partnership with the Msunduzi Municipality Youth Office, proudly hosted Leading Like Mandela: The Road to Liberty. A week-long youth leadership program that brought together leaders from Youth Ward Committees representing all 41 wards across the Msunduzi Municipality.

Rooted in the shared democratic values of South Africa and the United States, the program empowered young leaders through interactive workshops, discussions, and experiential learning focused on ethical leadership, civic engagement and public policy.

Highlights included educational visits to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature and the Mandela Capture Site, offering participants a deeper understanding of democratic governance, active citizenship, and Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy of service and freedom.

Participants also engaged with an outstanding lineup of speakers and facilitators, including U.S. Department of State ExchangeAlumni, a Fulbright Specialist, an English Language Fellow, representatives from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) South Africa, all of whom inspired the next generation of changemakers.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all our partners, facilitators, and participants for making this initiative a success. Together, we are investing in young leaders who will champion democracy, strengthen their communities, and build a more inclusive and prosperous future.

🇺🇸🇿🇦 Celebrating freedom. Inspiring leadership. Strengthening democracy.
