Courage, adventure, and a can-do attitude❤️💙
Alex Laurens (class of 1986) has completed not one, but two ultra-swim events in 2026.

In Alex’s words…
“This summer in Europe brought two unforgettable ultra distance swimming adventures, each one a reminder of what becomes possible when we lean into challenge, community, and the quiet power of endurance.

“I began in Switzerland at the UltraSwim 33.3 Switzerland event, a four day, 33.3 km journey around and across Lake Geneva that proved far more demanding than expected. Weather disruptions reshaped the schedule, turning the first two days into long, testing swims — including a 13 km marathon from Evian in France to Lausanne in Switzerland. Despite choppy water and high winds, I finished 26th overall and ninth among female skin swimmers, but the true reward was the shared determination among the 83 swimmers who faced the elements together.

“Three days later, I travelled to Finland for a completely new experience: a 24 km Arctic Circle river swim, completed in pairs for safety and surrounded by untouched pine forests, reindeer along the riverbanks, and the warmth of Finnish hospitality. My teammate and I completed the swim in five hours 42 minutes. It was not a race, but a profound reminder of how nature, swimming, and companionship can create moments of deep meaning.

“Both events reinforced something I treasure: the way endurance sports bring people together. The friendships formed — some stretching back years — and the shared spirit on the water are what make these challenges truly transformative. We’re already planning to return next year.”

Today, Friday 11 September, our Grade 10s take to the dance floor for the annual Vogue Ball!

Since 1985, the Vogue Programme has evolved from lessons in social graces, floral décor, makeup and ballroom dancing to a programme that builds confidence, connections, life skills and community spirit.

While much has changed, some traditions remain – including dancing with the boys of Maritzburg College and the much-loved father-daughter waltz. ❤️💙

Swipe through our photographs and take a trip down memory lane.

Nominations are open for the 2027 Umthelela Epworthian Award – an annual award celebrating Epworthians whose achievements, leadership and contribution are making a meaningful difference in South Africa and beyond. The award was introduced in 2026 by the fourth-generation Hampson family.

Umthelela means impact – and we want to celebrate Epworthians who are:
• Making an exceptional contribution to their community, profession, or field
• Inspiring and influencing others through leadership, service, or innovation
• Creating meaningful change and opportunities
• Going above and beyond to make a difference

Do you know an Epworthian whose impact deserves to be recognised?

Nominate a fellow Epworthian by Wednesday, 7 October 2026 by contacting Jan Menear at [email protected] or via the Umthelela Epworthian Award – Nominations 2027 form: -- https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/2zYEXKnfF8

We remember Reverend David Sadler, a much-loved member of the Epworth community, who has passed away at the age of 96.

A Methodist minister in Pietermaritzburg, he regularly preached at Epworth and other congregations, including our Sunday evening chapel services. Reverend Sadler served as Epworth Chaplain from 1996 to 2002 and continued to assist at the school until 2006.

Kind, gracious and humble, he will be remembered for his quiet manner, gentle presence, wise counsel, and for the care he showed to so many pupils.

Reverend Sadler’s four daughters attended Epworth, with his eldest daughter, Margaret, sadly passing away in a car accident soon after leaving school. His wife, Joy, passed away in 2020.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his daughters Hillary, Claire, and Jenny, and to his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the wider Sadler family.

All who knew Reverend Sadler are invited to join the family in celebrating his life at a memorial service in the Epworth Chapel on Saturday, 5 September, at 14h00.
