Hello! The Performing and Creative Arts Department is moving our courses this semester to "Distance Learning." If you are a student in any class in our department, you will be hearing from your specific professors soon about how the class will proceed, in an Internet-based form. Online classes will begin Thursday March 19, 2020. Individual professors will run each class their own way. If you have not heard from your professor by the time of your next class meeting, please try to e-mail them directly. Your professor might not have a valid e-mail address for you.

If you cannot reach your professor, and do not hear from them by the time of your next class meeting, please write to us for help:

Professor Chris Verene, [email protected]

Do not report to campus for lab work. None of our lab classes will be meeting in person, and this includes Music, Studio Art, Photography, Sculpture, Dance, and Drama. None of these labs and studios will be open for students.

Village Newsreels: Narrated Scrolls from West Bengal

September 23 -- October 26, 2019

An exhibition of narrative scroll painting by contemporary folk artists from West Bengal. This centuries-old tradition by mainly Sufi Muslim painters—who uniquely do not adhere to the Islamic ban on representing the figure—is being reinvented in the digital age. The painters were traditionally also songwriters and itinerant performers and many still are. With entertaining and serious topics ranging from Hindu and Muslim religious narratives, to major news events such as the 9/11 terror attacks, and information about preventing HIV-AIDS, these inventive and vividly decorated narrative scrolls have long functioned as a kind of handmade village newsreel.

Gallery talk: Thurs Sept 26, 3:30-4:30pm (club hours). Changing Traditions: a discussion of the recent history of Patua Scroll painting in West Bengal. With Geraldine Forbes, Professor emeritus of modern women’s history in West Bengal, and the collector.

Opening reception: Thurs September 26, 5-7pm.
