Let’s talk about learning differences beyond reading. 💙
Dyscalculia is a real and often overlooked learning difference that impacts understanding numbers, math facts, time, money, sequencing, and problem-solving.
A child can be bright, capable, and hardworking. In addition, still need support with math. Awareness is key. Early identification can be imperative. Compassion around all of this is vital.
It’s also important to know that Dyscalculia and Dyslexia can occur together. Many individuals experience challenges with both math and reading-based processing, which is more common than people realize. Learning differences often overlap, which is why comprehensive screening and individualized support are so important.

The dyslexic brain isn’t broken; it’s built for something bigger.
Where others see words, we see patterns.
Where others follow systems, we question them.
Where others memorize, we understand.
Dyslexia builds resilience, creativity, and the ability to think beyond the obvious this is exactly what leadership demands.
A great president, congressperson, firefighter, or medical professional doesn’t need perfect spelling.
They need vision, empathy, courage, and the ability to solve real problems.
Different doesn’t mean less.
Different means powerful. 🔥

In honor of International Women’s Day, here are a few iconic women who succeeded while navigating dyslexia and unequivocally proving that different ways of learning can lead to extraordinary creativity and impact.

🎤 Cher

📚 Agatha Christie
Despite difficulty with spelling and writing mechanics, she became one of the best-selling authors of all time. Her imagination created legendary mysteries that still captivate readers today.
⸻
🎥 Octavia Spencer
She has spoken openly about the challenges dyslexia brought when reading scripts. Today she’s an Oscar-winning actress and children’s author inspiring kids with learning differences.

Last but not least!
🌟 Appreciation for Cheryl Barker & Her Impact at Pdx Dyslexia 🌟
Long before she joined Pdx Dyslexia, Cheryl had spent years as a caregiver, nanny, and grade-school volunteer. But everything shifted when she witnessed Miranda’s remarkable transformation through the Barton Reading and Spelling System. Watching her daughter’s confidence return—seeing her light up as reading finally started to make sense—sparked something powerful in Cheryl. It wasn’t just progress; it was life-changing.
That experience inspired her to become a Barton tutor in 2019, and she has been pouring her heart into this work ever since. For more than five years, Cheryl has helped countless students find their footing, their voice, and their belief in themselves. Families regularly talk about her warmth, her encouragement, and the way she celebrates every victory—big or small.
At Pdx Dyslexia, Cheryl isn’t just a tutor.
She’s an advocate.
A guide.
A cheerleader.
And for many families, a source of hope during a time that can feel overwhelming.
Her mission is as genuine as it is powerful: to ensure children with dyslexia never feel alone, unheard, or unsupported. And every day, through her patience, her expertise, and her heart, she fulfills that mission beautifully.
We’re endlessly grateful for you, Cheryl—your passion, your perseverance, and the lives you change through your work.

We will be attending a resource fair this March! Hosted by the wonderful Tess Scholl.
She started this collective to meet the educational needs of her children, to help create balance on their homeschooling journey.
She is now helping to govern a shared resource fair space, where the collective community can come together in support, knowledge, and understanding.
We are excited to meet new families and make long lasting connections within the community!
Will we see you there?!

Where it all started -
Now a word from one of our student’s mothers;
“Miranda and Catherine have been the best thing for our son’s dyslexia journey. We appreciate their calm demeanor, capabilities in teaching the lessons and consistency. Our sons journey is just beginning, and were already noticing him learning amd retaining the information to learn to read and write! This experience has been immeasurably impacted our son - we always look forward to session days with Catherine!”
