Hello, loves! I’ve started a Meetup called The Birth Trauma Project. Our first meeting is at my Portland studio this Saturday at 2:00. Karys and I had so much fun making these treats for the Depressed Cake Shop Portland pop-up at Opal 28 today. Raising money and awareness for perinatal mental health is a cause that is dear to me. Postpartum depression and anxiety stole me away from my family when Karys was a baby. In honor of our struggle and the beautiful mother-daughter relationship that grew out of it, Karys and I made Rainbow Under the Fog cupcakes and a Monster of Depression cake (her idea) to benefit Baby Blues Connection. Both creations feature gray icing with rainbow cake underneath to represent the toll that mental health issues can take on us and represent that, with access to resources and the right kind of help, there is always hope.

An anthropologist suggests that the length of human pregnancy is limited primarily by a mother's metabolism, not the size of the birth canal. The research challenges the long-held notion of an evolutionary trade-off between childbirth and a pelvis adapted for walking upright.
