Ms. Cheng on why observing play is central to the work of early childhood care and education:
"The teachers first role is to create this environment that embodies a sense of safety, and to provide rich, minimally-structured materials that the child can use for complex learning in their play. It is not interfering with or guiding the child's decisions about what they are playing, how they are playing and with whom they are playing.
Then, on the foundation of the environment they have created, the teacher is an observer, a discoverer, and an understander. The teacher, in observing play, discovers the child, understands the child, discovers the true child, discovers how the child in play, how the child, in experiencing their right to true play, explores the world, how the child learns, how the child plays.
In this process of observation, the teacher, through observation, truly understands, truly comprehends how a child learns. They come to know what kind of child the child truly is, what the child's abilities are, what the child's disposition is, and what the child's potential for learning is."

Yes, it’s true that Kindergarten has transformed into First Grade. Yes, children will need to learn academics, listen and sit still. But that certainly doesn’t mean that these lessons should be straight-jacketed onto them in the toddler and preschool years. In fact, the funneling down of structured learning is all the more reason to let children play while they can. We must fiercely protect this precious, ever shrinking window of time for our children.
Play is enough. Play is enough. Play is enough. This should be our educational mantra for the first 5 years.

Frequent opportunities for outdoor play strengthen the core (stomach and back) and upper body muscles. These are pre-requisites for being able to do more "distal work" with the hands -- including writing!
