it’s been a huge transitional time at this year just like it has been for all of our individual lives and organizations around the world. in place of our annual benefit this year we are hosting a virtual speaker series that includes interactive presentations with .h and Laura Van Dernoot Libsky of the Trauma Stewardship Institute. each will offer their unique perspectives on the intersections of yoga, healing, and justice. tickets are live and donation based. please take a look and consider supporting our work. DM me with any questions.

just over here marking time again. it’s now been ten years of teaching yoga. l caught the yoga bug as the wave ascended to cultural phenomenon, like so many us, in the midst of life transitions, vulnerable and ready for a new world. if I go deep in my bones I still feel the beautiful yet completely ungrounded excitement of my full hearted leap. I brought a kind of boundless enthusiasm and a sincere studiousness to it, qualities in many ways I hope I have retained. I was so enthralled, thought yoga would change the world and in the midst of that fervor decided to utilize my privileges to create just as my personal yoga world of Anusara fell apart in yet another scandal. the wave crested and reality came rushing in. suddenly I could see what I couldn’t when I was stoned in love. yoga festivals, yoga meccas (🤦‍♂️). spiritual bypassing. my body needed diversified movement. insulated in a bubble i was able to ignore the political implications of an appropriated, capitalistic industry without a product but self-improvement to sell. I pulled back, tried to change my teaching to both respect the roots of the practice, adapt to its limitations and retain what I felt still worked. I tried to connect politics to vinyasa on a Tuesday night and check for blind spots with lots of help. I started leading retreats with - the most rewarding teaching experience of them all. I kept on showing up for same classes for years, trusting that this hybrid thing was good enough. i’m staggered but content with the snaking path. I can most assuredly thank the practices for self confrontation and a much more intimate relationship with myself. I hope some of that has been shared. I’m pretty sure an earnest drive remains. my focus feels more manageable - I do what I do and try to keep growing. my expectations more realistic - watching presence not perfecting poses. I have no idea where any of it’s going six months into a global pandemic that keeps us apart and a mass mobilization for social justice that has changed it all. what’s next is next but I still like forward folds.
