Algunas madres tienen dificultades para alimentar a sus bebés en el viaje arduo e impredecible de cruzar la frontera; otras son separadas de sus bebés que están amamantando, cuando son detenidas y deportadas por agentes de inmigración. Muchas inmigrantes indocumentadas se ven obligadas a volver a trabajar en cuestión de días de dar a luz, mientras que las amenazas de represalias y la posibilidad de ser deportada les impiden la defensa de su derecho a la licencia de maternidad y descansos en el trabajo para exprimir la leche. Las trabajadoras agrícolas están expuestas a los pesticidas que se filtran a la leche materna. Es importante notar que en algunos casos y circunstancias, las madres migrantes encuentran en sus nuevos países mayor apoyo y acceso a la información sobre prácticas de alimentación infantil. Sobre la base de los principios de la educación popular y la investigación participativa, Amamantar y Migrar es un proyecto de historia oral en que las madres inmigrantes:

• Comparten sus historias de la migración, la maternidad y la alimentación infantil a través de entrevistas de historia oral
• Analizan colectivamente sus historias para descubrir no sólo las barreras que las madres inmigrantes enfrentan en el ejercicio de su autonomía en las decisiones de alimentación infantil, sino también las posibles soluciones
• Crean medios de comunicación para compartir sus historias a través de foros diseñados para transformar las políticas injustas y lograr cambios sistémicos

A través de este proceso, los y las participantes asumen el control artístico sobre la interpretación y representación de sus propias historias—una intervención poderosa en si mismo, dada la objetivación, la mercantilización y la hiper-sexualización en la cultura dominante de los EE.UU. de los cuerpos y pechos de las mujeres, en particular para las mujeres de color. En última instancia, Amamantar y Migrar tiene como objetivos:

1) apoyar los esfuerzos de las madres inmigrantes en la defensa de su salud, la salud de sus bebés, y sus derechos humanos, dignidad humana y autodeterminación
2) contribuir a los esfuerzos organizativos en las intersecciones de la justicia racial y de género, los derechos laborales y de inmigrantes, y de la salud pública, materna, e infantil.

While migration is a global phenomenon, and figuring out how to feed one’s infant is a nearly universal experience, there’s remarkably little research, writing or art exploring connections between the two. Yet the embodied and affectively potent narratives of immigrant mothers quickly surface impacts of migration and immigration policies on their infant-feeding practices/options. Some mothers struggle to feed their babies on the arduous and unpredictable journey across the border. Others are separated from their breast-fed infants through detention and deportation. Many undocumented immigrants are forced to return to work within days of giving birth, while threats of retaliation and potential deportation prevent them from advocating for their right to maternity leave and to pump at work. Agricultural workers are exposed to pesticides that leach into breast milk. Sometimes mothers find greater access to information and infant-feeding support in their new countries. Drawing on principles of popular education and participatory research, Amamantar y Migrar (Breastfeeding and Migration) is a storytelling project engaging immigrant mothers to:

• Share their stories of migration, motherhood and infant-feeding via in-depth oral history interviews
• Collectively analyze their stories to surface not only barriers immigrant mothers face in exercising their autonomy in infant-feeding decisions, but also potential solutions
• Create media to share their stories via forums designed to shift policy and enact systems change. Through this process, participants command artistic control over the interpretation and representation of their own stories - a powerful intervention in its own right, given our culture’s objectification, commodification and hyper-sexualization of women’s bodies and breasts, particularly for women of color. But the process doesn’t end there. Ultimately, Amamantar y Migrar aims to:

1) support immigrant mothers’ efforts in advocating for their health, the health of their babies, and their basic human rights, dignity, and self-determination,

2) contribute to existing organizing efforts and campaigns at the intersections of gender and racial justice, workplace and immigrant rights, and maternal, infant and public health.
