The semester has started, our new international students have arrived at PNCA, lots of students have returned from their study abroad programs last semester, and soon everyone studying abroad in the spring will begin enrolling in their programs overseas!

Let's celebrate the start of the semester with our September TEA TIME!

We'll have SNACKS & DRINKS, but feel free to bring your lunch too!

What is Tea Time?? It's an event held by the Office of International Education (OIE) every 1st Thursday of the month during the lunch hour for international students and study abroad students to hang out, eat some treats, and chat about study abroad (or whatever else!).

There's no need to RSVP! Just show up at room 268 between noon and 1pm on Thursday, September 3rd for free snacks and good vibes. 😎

Hope to see you there!!

Happy first week of class -- we're over the hump and heading toward the weekend. We hope these first beautiful days of classes have been going smoothly.

Tomorrow marks the first drop-in advising of the fall semester at the OIE for international students. This is a protected time for you when you know you can pop in for a quick question and someone will be ready to assist you. It happens twice each week at the OIE offices at PNCAand in Salem:

Mondays 12:30 - 2:00
Thursdays 3:30 - 5:00

You don't have to have an appointment. What are good things for drop-in advising?

* Ask a quick question
* Get help with a WU process
* Drop off or pick up a form
* Get a fast travel signature on your I-20 or DS-2019

We hope to see some of you Thursday!

The new international students and the OIE have been busy bees for over a week, but it's always exciting to get to the first day of the semester. We get to again say welcome to new students AND welcome back to our continuing international students and students coming back from abroad.

Time to shine!! ☀️ 🎉

Airport pick up day!! It's a fun day as we finally meet the students with whom we've been working since March, in some cases. We and the snack packs rode the school bus to PDX.

We've used the same Costco broccoli box for forever to haul snacks. Kind of feels like our good luck charm and we feel a little superstitious about its someday demise.

[BTW, Joe B drove the cargo van for luggage. Ariel met us at pdx ☺️]

We love the Portland Japanese Garden and are happy to be partners with them, so this shout out makes us very happy.

The New York Times has named Portland Japanese Garden as one of seven gardens "so serene" that some "won't believe they're in the city."

It was really special to be able to take a moment to reflect on David Eckard's art practice and life at the recent curator talk with Daniel Duford.  In support of the CCAC exhibit, Don't Be Clever, Be True: Late Works by David Eckard, Daniel gave insight into Dave's process, his studio, and his evolution as an artist.  We miss Dave Eckard tremendously so we were happy to have a little time with him again via this talk and exhibit.

Thanks to Daniel Duford for curating the exhibit and for giving the talk and to the Center for Contemporary Art & Culture for hosting the exhibit at PNCA.  The exhibit is viewable until June 20th.

PNCA's commencement is always a delight but getting to celebrate at the Portland Art Museum was a special treat. Joining our international student and the students who studied abroad was a really lovely way to end a day of ceremonies.

Special congratulations to Malique on his thesis award.

Great job all around!!

Twenty-five WU students got their first passport for FREE via the OIE!

Last spring, the Office of International Education was awarded an IIE American Passport Project grant by the Institute of International Education to support 25 Pell-eligible students in obtaining their first U.S. passport during this academic year. Focused primarily on first year students, the goal is to remove a common barrier that prevents students from considering study abroad. This "no strings" funding allows students to obtain passports without having to commit to studying abroad, though we hope they might. Having a passport is good for all kinds of reasons and over the course of this academic year, we're happy to have supported 23 first year students and 2 second-year students at PNCA and in Salem through the application process.

Thanks to IIE for the grant and for allowing us the privilege to work with this great group of students. We're excited to see what happens next for each of them now that they have their first passports!
