It was really special to be able to take a moment to reflect on David Eckard's art practice and life at the recent curator talk with Daniel Duford. In support of the CCAC exhibit, Don't Be Clever, Be True: Late Works by David Eckard, Daniel gave insight into Dave's process, his studio, and his evolution as an artist. We miss Dave Eckard tremendously so we were happy to have a little time with him again via this talk and exhibit.
Thanks to Daniel Duford for curating the exhibit and for giving the talk and to the Center for Contemporary Art & Culture for hosting the exhibit at PNCA. The exhibit is viewable until June 20th.

PNCA's commencement is always a delight but getting to celebrate at the Portland Art Museum was a special treat. Joining our international student and the students who studied abroad was a really lovely way to end a day of ceremonies.
Special congratulations to Malique on his thesis award.
Great job all around!!

Twenty-five WU students got their first passport for FREE via the OIE!
Last spring, the Office of International Education was awarded an IIE American Passport Project grant by the Institute of International Education to support 25 Pell-eligible students in obtaining their first U.S. passport during this academic year. Focused primarily on first year students, the goal is to remove a common barrier that prevents students from considering study abroad. This "no strings" funding allows students to obtain passports without having to commit to studying abroad, though we hope they might. Having a passport is good for all kinds of reasons and over the course of this academic year, we're happy to have supported 23 first year students and 2 second-year students at PNCA and in Salem through the application process.
Thanks to IIE for the grant and for allowing us the privilege to work with this great group of students. We're excited to see what happens next for each of them now that they have their first passports!

The students participating in the Art Semester program in Monterrey Mexico recently had a great time exploring Oaxaca as one of their program's academic excursions. The group, led this semester by Whitworth faculty leader Dr. Katie Creyts, spent the visit taking in all of the things this rich area of Mexico provides. Highlights included a morning trip up to Monte Alban where the group learned about the Pre-Hispanic culture and architecture of the Zapotec people, a printmaking workshop with a group of progressive Oaxaqueños, and getting a good soaking when the sky broke and dumped rain and hail on everyone!
This program is open to students from all schools that are part of the ILACA consortium. Willamette (including PNCA) and Whitworth are two of the 10 schools that are part of the ILACA consortium.
Fue una gran excursión.

Congratulations to Julia who presented her Intermedia thesis project yesterday. Entitled "Third Space," it was a sculptural table that combines furniture and performance to create a communal experience space.
Julia studied abroad in spring of last year at the Burren College of Art in Ireland.
Great job Julia!

Congratulations to Malique who shared his beautiful photography via Baile, his thesis presentation in photography. His project captures Ballet Folklorico and the culture behind their artistry.
We've enjoyed seeing Malique's work since his time abroad in Belgium via LUCA. His thesis photos capture energy, culture and color and bring us into the spectacular moments he captures.

Congrats to Sophia who spent last fall abroad at York St. John University in the UK. Today she successfully presented her thesis proposal, Tale of the Lifeguard Ghost.
We can't wait to see the final short, animated film when she does her oral presentation in the fall.

Congratulations to Lizzet who made her final presentation in Graphic Design. Her Two World project invited us into a new space where we could experience her ideas around culture, identity, and swag.
And it was also a mini "Art Semester in Monterrey" reunion!

Congratulations to Soren who successfully presented his Illustration thesis project, Dejection. It's always so fun to hear and see how these projects get from proposal to the finished product -- in this case, a beautiful comic book.
We marveled at Soren's time abroad in Norway at the University of Bergen, and we're so glad to see more of Soren's skills and talents as he brings this industrious project to a successful conclusion.
