Greetings during these difficult times.

We had a strike settlement on Monday at 4am, between the Portland Association of Teachers and the Portland Public Schools bargaining team, but it was torpedoed by certain school board members (Julia Brim-Edwards, Gary Hollands, Herman Greene). Their objection to the agreement was the establishment of local school Class Size Committees made up of two administrators, two teachers and two parents. These board members didn't want parents to have a voice and a vote. So the strike continues as we attempt to push these members to come to their senses.

Now a small group of parents is attempting to organize other parents against the teachers. They are circulating a "survey" (which is actually a "push-pull" survey, ie.set up for a particular result) to demand that the PAT leadership give into this sabotage of the settlement by these board members. It repeats the board members' unfounded concerns about "confidential student information." We have proof these Class Size Committees will effectively lower class sizes, as they have been doing just that in St. Paul, Minnesota schools.

The "survey" is being posted on various school pages.

Please push back on this campaign to undermine the PAT. Remove the survey and/or urge parents not to participate, to trust the teachers to fight for the schools our students deserve.
The "survey" is called "Survey Regarding PPS-PAT Strike Status"

Rest up over the holiday and be ready to continue the fight for great public schools for all!

Solidarity,
Jamie Partridge

50 Reasons Why Portland Teachers Are Striking | NEA 11/02/2023

This from PAT, today... Portland family,

Today was another powerful day on the picket line and rallying in front of PPS Headquarters. Our message is being heard across the city and the pressure is building for district leaders to give us the contract Portland students deserve.

Rally
This is not a moment, it’s a movement. And we need to continue to make our demands until they are met.

There are so many reasons why our members are on strike. Check out 50 of them here. https://www.nea.org/nea-today/all-news-articles/why-portland-teachers-are-striking

Tomorrow we will be back on the picket line! Join us starting at 7:45 a.m. at every school in Portland. The citywide rally will take place at noon at Lincoln High School. Bring your walking shoes since we will be marching through downtown. Make sure to tag us in your solidarity posts so that we can highlight the size and might of our support.

If you can’t join us in person, you can take action online by texting SUPPORT to 48744.

When teachers are respected and schools are funded, our students thrive. Tomorrow we will be back at the bargaining table to advocate for a contract that secures a strong future for Portland communities. The fight continues!

In solidarity,

The PAT Team

50 Reasons Why Portland Teachers Are Striking | NEA Portland teachers have been negotiating for months—but they still haven’t gotten what they and their students need.
