Health, Yoga, and Healing: What Does Sleep Have to Do With Them?
Do you frequently work late at night? Do you like to party with your buddies till morning? Or do you have a child that always keeps you up? If yes, there's a high chance that you don't get enough sleep.
Hustle culture tells us that sleep is for the weak. But, on the contrary, sleep is essential. Sleep and mental health are inextricably connected. Unfortunately, due to work, family, and other responsibilities, many of us do not get the needed seven or eight hours of sleep. It's all too easy to get into the habit of drinking another cup of coffee to get us through the day. However, by doing this, we are also sacrificing our physical and mental health.
In this episode, Sarasvati Hewitt joins us to talk about the science of sleep. She also shares the connection between sleep, mental health, and gut health and how Yin is at the centre of all of it. Finally, as a PTSD survivor herself, Sarasvati explains why we should not avoid nightmares but rather confront them.
If you're looking for ways to get more restful sleep, this episode is for you!
Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:
1. Understand the importance of sleep.
2. Unravel the connection between mental health, gut health, and sleep
3. Discover why dreaming can help people with PTSD.

I am passionate about Yin yoga and the science of sleep.
Here are 11 reasons to practice yin yoga.
1. By holding past three minutes in a stretch we access the fascia and connective tissues and create a phase change in the gel/sol collagen.
2. Yin is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy.
3. It doesn’t matter what it looks like it matters what it feels like.
4. Yin teaches us that our bones will ultimately determine what we can and cannot do as far as Yoga shapes.
5. Yin yoga can help to remove insomnia by allowing emotional processing on the mat.
6. Yin helps us to sleep which increases our immunity, fertility, muscle relaxation and makes us less susceptible to genetic dispositions like Alzheimer’s, dementia and cancer.
7. Yin helps us to sleep better which greatly affects our ability to learn and retain information.
8. By sleeping better we dream more and in the dream realm we can process emotion and become more creative.
9. The community is a constant reminder that even though we are all very different anyone who practices yin is seeking to reveal truth on and off the mat.
10. Yin moves the body out of the sympathetic nervous system= fight/flight and into the parasympathetic= rest/digest.
11. Yin yoga increases your serotonin levels which then increases your melatonin levels and works toward overall health awake and asleep.
