Hey AK'ers,
Colin here, the past NUNM AK president for 3 years. I am going to post once and awhile about the amazing applications of AK for your future practice! Today I am posting on the incredible deductive power of observing posture and gait! Gait is another word for how someone walks. As NDs, when we do a neuro exam, we may ask patients to walk on their toes or heels to determine if there is lumbar disk herniation. Well.......there is SO MUCH MORE that posture and gait can tell us about the health of our patients!!!!!
Observing your patient's gait and posture is the first thing we do in an AK assessment. You will be blown away by how much information you can learn from someone's posture and gait, it is literally like Sherlock Holmes entered the chat!!! If you look at Chapter 2 in AK Synopsis (Blue Book) by Walther, you will see all the common forms of postural representations of muscle imbalance. This literally gives you the roadmap to how to determine what muscle imbalances may be present. Remember, if a muscle is weak, it could indicate an internal issue in organs or glands. Or you can pinpoint an injury before the patient even tells you their story! As Dr. Goodheart called it "muscle testing without muscle testing." Your observations can tell you so much about a patient before they even begin to speak!!!
Try observing one another's posture and gait and see what muscle imbalances you come up with. Then, test their muscles and see if your observations match the strength of their muscle.
Were you correct in your observation, or was the muscle test the opposite of your observation?
Let me know in the comments and have fun :)

Hey AKers! Just wanted to give a few updates in case anyone isn't on the email list. If you want to be added leave your name and email in the comment section and we will get you on board!
For the rest of the term we will be hosting meetings in room 206, 2 days a week to try and accommodate everyone's schedules. Tuesdays from 12-1pm and Thursdays from 3-4pm.
We also have a fun field trip coming up to visit Dr. McCall at his office in Beaverton for anyone who wants to join. We will be meeting there at 11am on Sunday November 14th. I'll provide a link to his website so you can check him out and see a bit about his practice! This is a great time to come check out what AK is about, especially if you haven't been able to come to club meetings this term. Hope to see you soon!
