Congratulations to the April 2026 Birth Doula Workshop graduates! This group made me laugh so much!Which I really needed! They kept my energy going with their relaxed and inquisitive presence! These amazing doulas have the opportunity to certify through DONA which give them the opportunity to connect with an organization that has been a foundational organization in the growth of Doula’s around the world. They can also become certified in Oregon as a THW Doula and Washington State as a certified Doula. It is an amazing time in history for doulas and I am so grateful I chose this profession in 2005!

Thank you to this wonderful group of doulas for trusting me to teach them postpartum doula skills! We had so much fun and was a great way to celebrate the start of World Doula Week! I now have my first postpartum doula workshop under my belt! 21 years of doula work and 13 years of training new doulas! It is so amazing to see the growth in our profession.

How Coverage Actually Works with Commercial Plans

Even though state law requires coverage, commercial insurers and employers may implement it differently in practice:

Direct Billing vs. Reimbursement

Many doulas are not yet credentialed as billable medical providers in insurer networks, so they cannot bill plans directly like a doctor or clinic would. In that case:

Clients pay the doula upfront, and the doula provides a superbill — an itemized receipt with required codes — which the enrollee submits to the insurer for reimbursement. Encourage potential clients to contact their insurance company directly to know what’s needed to direct bill or provide a super bill to your client for reimbursement.

Some insurers (e.g., Kaiser Permanente Oregon commercial plans) have developed more direct coverage:

This means actual billing practices vary by insurer and whether doulas have the necessary provider status in that insurer’s system.

Well, I have to say I feel pretty sad that it’s over but I’m so incredibly grateful that I have this community that I get to be a part of. I’ve been a member of for 20 years! I’ve been a certified Doula for 18 years and a approved Doula trainer for 13 years! Just like any organization, there’s always gonna be ups and downs. I think it’s important as a Doula to be connected to an organization that is larger than my state and larger than myself. DONA is an international organization and one of the best parts of going to a conference is getting to connect with Doulas from all over the world and doulas in my community.

I also have to say it’s pretty amazing when one of your friends becomes the president of the organization that you love so much. of brought this Conference to the next level! The speaker selection was absolutely superb. from the opened our conference with the real conversations doulas need to be having. laid out trauma stewardship for us, and how Doula‘s work within the realities of the job that we’re doing. This was just the beginning of day one!
