PDX Playwrights

PDX Playwrights PDX Playwrights is a group for playwrights who want to meet, hear their scripts read aloud, and share their stories.

Typically we have about a dozen people at each meeting: playwrights, actors, and friends. Plays are read aloud by whoever’s at the table that night. We encourage you to attend even if you aren’t bringing a play… New readers are always welcome!

Join us TONIGHT for the very first table read of "Jan Kerouac is Missing (Or, the Clubhouse of Unfinished Projects)" by Karen Polinsky!

Jan Kerouac, the only child of Jack, and author of the recently re-released "Baby Driver," was an accomplished writer of books and poems. This play recreates Jan’s journey from early days in New York City to her culmination as an artist in her own right, from L*D trips at age 13 to peril in the jungles of South America. The drama takes place in her mother Joan Haverty’s house in Kittitas County, Washington, with a garden and no electricity, which Jan describes as “the clubhouse of unfinished projects.” The play explores a realm outside of time where nothing actually gets done, yet every moment is precious.

Tonight's table read will begin at 7 pm at the Portland Playhouse studio. Hope to see you there!

Thank you to everyone who joined us Tuesday for a reading of "Escape from America" by Terence Joseph Quinn! We appreciate everyone who listened and provided feedback, including all non-dramaturgs who simply enjoy supporting the playwriting process.

A big thank you to Portland Playhouse for the use of their (air conditioned) studio and to the actors who brought the play to life on a cold read.

And a very special thank you to Terence for submitting a fresh and thought-provoking play.

Be sure to mark your calendars for Tuesday, September 1 when we'll be gathering for a table read of "Jan Kerouac is Missing (Or, the Clubhouse of Unfinished Projects)" by Karen Polinsky!

Our next table read is this Tuesday, August 4 at 7 pm and we want you to join us for "Escape from America" by Terence Joseph Quinn!

In a basement apartment in Portland, four gay roommates are running out of time as the country outside turns hostile. To survive long enough to make a break for the Canadian border, they throw themselves into an escalating string of disguises — all while dodging a dim, twitchy federal agent who's always one step behind. It's broad, fast, In Living Color-style sketch comedy built on real stakes.

Hear the full script at the Portland Playhouse Studio!
