Hood (Wy’East), the Mazamas is an Oregon-based 501(c)3 with a tradition of providing excellence in climbing education, leadership, and conservation in the PNW. The Mazamas is a nonprofit mountaineering education organization formed on the summit of Mt. We offer activities, classes, and events for members and the community.

And they’re off.

Round the Mountain 2026 begins today. And this year, getting to say that feels especially sweet.

After weeks of wildfire closures, the Timberline Trail reopened just yesterday. And today, our RTM teams are setting out to spend three days making their way around Mt. Hood.

Nearly 40 miles. Alpine meadows and glacial streams. Forests, ridgelines and those stop-you-in-your-tracks views of the mountain from every side.

The Timberline Trail is truly one of the great treasures of the Pacific Northwest, and we're feeling particularly grateful for the chance to share it with this year's participants.

We're also grateful for the firefighters and crews whose work helped make this reopening possible — and mindful that fires are still burning and closures remain elsewhere in the forest.

Have the BEST time out there, RTM crew. Take it all in. We'll see you on the other side of the mountain.

Congratulations to our newest Wilderness First Responders!

WFRs train for the moments none of us hope to encounter — an injury miles from a trailhead, an illness deep in the backcountry, changing conditions that turn a straightforward trip into something much more complicated.

They learn to assess patients, manage injuries and illness, weigh risk and make decisions about evacuation when professional rescue and hospital care may be hours — or longer —away.

And they put in some serious work to get there: 28 hours of online learning, five full days of hands-on practical training and a final exam.

So yes, congratulations. But also — thank you. Every one of us who spends time in the mountains is a little luckier when someone with these skills happens to be nearby.

Our WFR course is offered in collaboration with Base Medical and meets nationally recognized certification standards.

Join the Mazamas Advanced Rock Committee for a morning of top roping at Ozone Crag, just across the river in Washington.

We’ll have ropes set on a variety of routes, so you can climb, work on your movement, ask questions, pick up a few tips and spend a few hours outside with fellow climbers. AR volunteers handle the anchors and rope setup. You bring your gear, snacks, water and stoke.

Open to BCEP grads (or higher badge level) and climbers with a current belay card from a local gym.

It’s the last weekend of August. Go outside.

Touch grass. Find a trail. Seek a summit. Swim in something cold. Stand under a very old tree. Look around and remember why all of this is worth fighting for.

Then come home and get to work.

Right now, the Roadless Rule — which protects millions of acres of our national forests from most roadbuilding and logging — is facing repeal. The public has until Sept. 21 to weigh in.

New research paints an increasingly heartbreaking picture for the northern spotted owl, now functionally extinct or approaching functional extinction across significant portions of its range.

And in Yosemite National Park, federal officials are considering a land exchange that could turn a piece of national park land into an access road serving private development.

So soak up these last days of August. Check fire conditions and closures, recreate responsibly and leave things better than you found them.

Then lend your signature. Submit a comment. Write your representatives. Make some noise.

Your public lands need more than your footprints. They need your voice.

Grab the kiddos and join us THIS Saturday, Aug. 29, for a gentle wander around Mount Tabor!

This one is for babies in carriers, big kids on their own two feet, parents, partners and anyone figuring out how hiking with little ones actually works. If you're new to it, even better. Come ask questions, meet other families and find a community that wants to help you get outside together.

Intermediate Climbing School kicks off tonight with its welcome lecture, and we're stoked to have a new crew of climbers ready to dig in.

Over the next six months, they'll build the technical skills, judgment and leadership needed to take on more complex terrain, from rock and snow to ice and alpine environments. They'll learn from experienced Mazama instructors, put in plenty of time outside and, just as importantly, become stronger partners and leaders in the mountains.

It's a big commitment. It's a lot of learning. And tonight is where it begins.

KNOW YOUR PUBLIC LANDS

Loving the mountains means paying attention to what’s happening to them.

Right now, that means staying vigilant during wildfire season: check restrictions and closures before you head out, know the fire danger and remember that conditions can change quickly.

It also means looking beyond our next adventure.

Decisions being made right now could shape Oregon’s public lands for decades. The federal Roadless Rule, which protects roughly 2 million acres in Oregon from most new road building, faces an uncertain future. And this year, the BLM rescinded a rule that had put conservation on more equal footing with other uses of public lands.

Policy can feel far removed from a weekend in the mountains. It isn’t. These decisions affect forests, wildlife habitat, watersheds, recreation and the wild places we love.

Love the wild. Recreate responsibly in the wild. Pay attention to what happens to the wild.

What counts as a Mazama hike? Turns out, a lot.

We’re picking berries. Hiking at sunset. Hitting the trails with our pooches.

We’re going on mindfulness hikes and wildflower hikes. Picking up trash. Helping with glacier research and wildlife monitoring. Backpacking. And getting our after-work miles in on weekday urban Rambles.

Basically, if there’s a reason to get outside together, there’s probably a hike for it.
