In light of the recent events in Florida - and in light of all of the modern school shootings since the University of Texas Tower shooting in 1966 - schools and colleges nationwide are planning a walkout on Wednesday, March 14th at 10:00 am in protest of our government’s refusal to actively address the issues of gun control and mental health.

Enough is enough. We are tired of our federal government’s willful inaction in the face of rising gun violence. We are tired of politicians putting the profits generated from gun sales and the lining of their own pockets with millions of dollars in political donations from the National Rifle Association (NRA) ahead of the safety and security of our students, our teachers, our staff, and our communities. And we are tired of being told that “now is not the time” to talk about gun control.

We, the students of Portland Community College, are asking students, staff, and faculty to join us - and thousands of people across the country - in sending a message to Washington: now is the time.

Now is the time for stricter gun control laws, proven to prevent mass shootings and gun-related deaths in every other developed nation in the world. Now is the time for increased funding for mental health treatment so that tragedies like the one at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and Rancho Tehama Reserve, and Umpqua Community College, and the numerous other acts of violence that target students and all Americans never again happen. Now is the time to prevent our instructors and teachers from having to lay down their lives to protect their students. And now is the time for us to stand together and say “enough is enough.”

For 17 minutes - one minute for each student who was murdered in the Florida shooting.
