Hello PPS PTAs / Family Groups / Families,
This is Isabel Johson, parent advocate, Glencoe PTA Board Advocacy Chair, and Portland Council PTA, VP Franklin Cluster. Along with parent advocates from Community & Parents for Public Schools (Christy Splitt and Ashley Schofield) and Families for Equity in Education (Elizabeth Doerr and Mike Westling) we have organized two town halls on education funding, one Monday, May 13th at Franklin HS and one Tuesday, May 14th at Chapman ES.
This is a unique opportunity to come and tell our school stories to the people who make the funding decisions. And for us to hear what our legislators can tell us about K-12 education funding in Oregon. Everyone is welcome - we hope to see students, parents, caregivers, educators, and anyone interested in K-12 education.
Here are digital flyers you can share with your communities. Please help spread the word! We must show our legislators that education funding matters to us. And if you can't make either date, we have an easy action alert for you. The Oregon PTA is collecting stories on our underfunded schools. Share your story HERE before May 28th: https://www.votervoice.net/mobile/ORPTA/campaigns/115108/respond
The collected stories will be delivered to the State Legislature the next time they meet in Salem, May 29-31.

Host a Japanese Student March 23-30
Hosting an international student is a great way to learn about a new culture, establish global friendships, and introduce young people to the great wide world. It is an impactful experience centered around international collaboration, solidarity, and education. The students are coming to share cultures, practice English, and become part of an American family. Students will have weekday English classes and activities at Pacific International Academy on the Warner Pacific University campus (commuting on public transit), and spend evenings and weekends with their host. Backup hosts are also needed for college students attending PSU 2/4-23 and 2/18-2/9. Students bring their own spending money and are covered by comprehensive medical and accident insurance. Hosts receive orientation materials, 24/7 support, and a small hosting stipend. ACES is a PNW nonprofit that has been connecting families and students since 1995. Dear PPS community leaders and fellow parent volunteers,
I am writing to request help in sharing two legislative advocacy opportunities with your school communities. All of us have stories and experiences about how the underfunding of our public schools has affected our students’ learning experiences. We shared many of those stories together during the teacher strike in November. By “knocking on the doors” of our legislature, we plan to send another strong message that as parents and caregivers, we are not giving up on the fight to give our students and teachers what they need in the classroom. There are so many ways we all show up to support our school community, and every little bit counts! If you have the time, capacity, and energy, I am asking that you take some time to participate in the opportunities and/or share the information with your community.
The first opportunity to share is the Parent Lobby Day planned for Monday, February 26th. There is a group of parents who are making plans to head down to Salem to meet with Portland area state legislators to let them know, in-person, how important increasing K-12 education funding is to our communities. If you have the available capacity to join, please use this link to fill out the interest form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe4D0RkQw5K1-OPdZgDhJFh0HEgvTTYeenHUbBznkArwx2idQ/viewform?usp=sf_link
We hope you share the attached flyer which has a QR to the interest form. We need all the bodies we can get!
The second opportunity, which we hope is accessible for more community members, is sending an email to your state legislators to let them know you are tracking how our state shows up in the next year to fully fund public schools. With the help of other PPS parent leaders, who are also passionate about finding connections and pathways for fully funded schools in Oregon, we have drafted some messaging you can use. Click here for some sample messaging for you to send to your community which includes information about both of these advocacy opportunities - please adjust to accommodate your community’s preference for sharing information: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yHGHOuDBtGxnGZdTcaAeb8rrvxoQAnMFKw0Pg3ZEV7c/edit?usp=sharing
I hope you can help us send a loud unifying message before the (short) legislative session ends on March 10! Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or want to know more. At a minimum, please help us by posting the Parent Lobby Day flyer on their social media platforms!
Thank you!
