Is your high schooler worried about choosing the "wrong" major in a world being reshaped by AI? They're not alone, and the good news is, they have more power in this than they think.

A recent survey found that nearly half of college students have considered changing their major because of AI. Some are leaving the tech field; others are moving into it. The landscape is shifting fast, and the job market your student will enter in 4–5 years is still evolving.

So what should families actually be doing right now?

Our new blog post walks through:
• What the data really says (and what it doesn't)
• Why no major is simply "safe" or "unsafe"
• Why skills and experiences matter more than the major title
• The specific questions to ask on college visits that most families skip

This is a must-read for any junior or senior, or the parents supporting them, who want to approach the college search with clarity and confidence.

To every senior waiting on final decisions:

This moment can feel heavy, and that makes sense. You’ve invested time, energy, and hope into this process.

But after years of working with students, I can tell you this with confidence:
The name of the college is not what determines your future. What matters is what you do once you get there.

The students who thrive are the ones who: engage deeply in their classes, build real relationships with professors and mentors, take initiative beyond what’s required, stay open to growth, even when things don’t go as planned.

I’ve seen students take many different paths and find success, purpose, and opportunity in all kinds of places. No decision can take away what you’ve already shown: your work ethic, your resilience, your willingness to put yourself out there. There is not one “right” outcome. There are many right paths.

Take a breath and be proud of how far you’ve come.

Wishing you clarity, confidence, and good news in the days ahead!

Families with current juniors should take note: the University of Southern California is expanding its Early Decision option to nearly all undergraduate programs starting with Fall 2027 applicants.

After piloting Early Decision within the USC Marshall School of Business, USC will now offer a binding Early Decision pathway across most majors.

Key details:
• Deadline: November 1
• Binding commitment if admitted
• Decisions released mid-December
• Early Action and Regular Decision remain available
• Early Decision is not offered for the USC Kaufman School of Dance, USC Thornton School of Music, or USC School of Dramatic Arts

USC has seen application numbers climb above 80,000 in recent cycles. Expanding Early Decision allows the university to secure part of its incoming class early, and gives students who are certain USC is their first choice an earlier answer.

For juniors with USC on their list, this is an important strategic shift.
Early Decision makes sense when:
✔ USC is truly the top choice
✔ The family is comfortable with the binding commitment
✔ Financial considerations have been discussed

If USC is “one of several favorites,” now is the time to research more deeply and determine whether it should be the first choice or remain within a student’s broader mix.

This change is just another reminder that application strategy matters more each year, including for current juniors applying next fall! This is exactly the kind of information I help students navigate thoughtfully: weighing fit, finances, competitiveness, and long-term goals before making binding decisions.

It’s easy to focus on the most selective schools on a student’s list, but that’s not where most students end up, nor where they necessarily thrive.

This season, make a point to celebrate every acceptance:
– the school that recognized your student early
– the place that offers your student a great scholarship
– the campus where your student felt genuinely seen and welcomed

The “right” college is not always the one with the lowest admission rate. It’s the one where your student can grow, find mentors, and build a life that reflects who they are. 🎓✨

A college rejection hurts, even when your student knows the school was a reach.

Three things your teen needs to hear if the answer is “no”:
“It’s okay to be upset. This mattered to you.”
“This decision does not define your intelligence, talent, or future.”
Rejection hurts, but it’s part of life. I am so proud of you for pushing yourself.
“You will have other great options, and I’ll help you explore them when you’re ready.”

Try to resist the urge to overanalyze the decision or ask what they “could have done differently.” Instead, listen, validate their feelings, and give them time. The conversation about Plan B can come later, once the sting has softened.

Deferred from an early college? It’s not the end of the story.

A deferral generally means:
– You’re academically on track.
– The college wants to see mid-year grades or the full applicant pool.

Smart next steps (if the college allows them):
– Send updated grades.
– Share significant new achievements.
– Consider a short, specific letter of continued interest.

Then, importantly:
– Turn your attention back to your full list and to keeping up your senior year grades.
– Keep your focus on the colleges that are excited to say “yes” right now.

Deferrals can mean different things at different institutions (USC, for example, defers practically every student it is not ready to admit early). Asking your college counselor or researching a college’s deferral practices can give you more insight. In general, however, it means you still have a chance, but that you need to balance patience with excitement for the schools saying “yes!” right now.

Happy New Year from College Bound and Ready!

We give a lot of power to college names. But again and again, research and real lives tell the same story:

Where you go matters less than what you do once you get there.
Students build meaningful futures when they:
– seek out mentors and professors,
– dive into clubs, research, and internships,
– practice resilience and curiosity,
– invest in their communities.

As decisions continue to roll in, keep bringing your student back to this truth:
“You are the engine of your own success, not the admissions office.”

College Decisions Are Coming In! Students: Plan Ahead How You’ll Read the Results

Especially for students on the West Coast, admission decisions are often released during school hours. But seniors, that doesn’t mean you have to open your decisions in the hallway between classes!

You’re allowed to:
– wait until you get home,
– choose who’s with you (or go solo),
– keep the result off group chats until you’re ready.

The decision may be out of your hands, but how you receive it is still yours to control. 💬🧡 You will have friends and family to support and/or celebrate with you, even if it’s an hour or two after the results come in!

12/06/2025

Over the next few weeks, many seniors will hear back from their early colleges. Some will get the “yes” they hoped for. Many will receive mixed results.
If you’re a parent, this is the moment to remind your student:
– You are so much more than any single college’s decision.
– Whatever happens next, I am proud of who you are.
– There are many paths that will lead to your success and happiness.
College admissions results are often more about institutional priorities (diversity in all forms, budgets, majors, special talents), not your child’s worth and ability. Your calm reassurance and perspective are powerful gifts you can offer right now. 💛 Before decisions arrive, remind your teen how proud you are of them and how confident you are in their future success.
