Nosce Te Ipsum
I have always been a skeptical mystic. Simultaneously enthralled by the unknown, whilst unconvinced that anyone could claim absolute knowledge.
Since I can remember, religion posed more questions than answers.
Iceland’s concession to Christianity, while continuing to worship the old Norse pantheon in secret, made me ponder how one could truly know which one was the right one.
I got to travel a lot as a child, meet many interesting people who were willing to converse with a curious little girl. I quickly learned of countless myths, stories, folklore and religions. I loved the windows they opened into a world unknown to me.
I appreciate the fundamental values of these stories, many of which overlap with each other repeatedly.
I see them as tales meant to offer perspective and guide us in our efforts to build civilized societies. A set of principles to help us maintain the rule of law, a necessity to justly resolve disputes.
I need not be religious to appreciate a moral code. It simply means I realized a long time ago, that there is far more to this world than what any of us can claim to know for certain.
A beautiful notion in my mind, as it leaves the door open to magic, the mystical, the divine and after all, that has always been the most fascinating aspect of these old stories to begin with.
Character is not built through fear of punishment, it is built on the desire to do what is right, without expectation.
Freedom is earned by living in accordance with your own moral values.
That is where we eventually find our peace of mind, the absolution from self doubt.
A lightness of being is brought about by learning to trust in ourselves, in our own character, in the knowledge that we need not fear the dark so long as we endeavor to embody the light itself.

Who are you? And are you brave enough to find out?

Have you ever noticed how the expectations you set for yourself, differ from your expectation of others?
Human beings seem to find it much easier to care for someone else, than for themselves.
Would you ever talk to someone you love the same way you talk to yourself?
I want you to imagine that you are taking care of someone you love, a child perhaps, a younger sibling or someone that has a hard time caring for themselves. What would you do?
You’d make sure they were safe and comfortable, had a cozy place to sleep, got at least three healthy meals a day.
If they made an honest mistake, you wouldn’t chastise them and beat them down, would you?
I suspect, you would let them know it was ok to make mistakes, and encourage them to try again. You would try to make sure they were receiving the right stimulation to foster growth.
If someone said anything negative about them, you’d feel visceral and defend their honor, right?
So why is it, that when it comes to our own self care, we tend towards slacking?
We neglect our sleep, our nutrition, our exercise, our intellect, hygiene, and need for social connection.
Now, I want to you to take a time traveling trip, back into the brain of 5 year old you. What is your perspective?
Where were you? What was the circumstance? What did you long for? What did you love? What did you think was right and wrong? Who did you want to be when you grew up?
Did you get there?
Why not?
I want you to take note of what support you think was lacking in order to help you become the best version of you, that you could ever be.
Would 5 year old you have been proud of the you, you are today?
Now imagine you are on your death bed. Your looking back over your life, scanning your memories one last time to savor the good. What do you hope to remember? What do you think your future self would think of how you spent your time?
I hope to see you tomorrow morning for the..
