The American Orff-Schulwerk Association (AOSA) is saddened to announce the death of Roger Sams, teacher, author, composer, and AOSA Teacher Educator, who passed away on September 3, 2026. For more than four decades, Roger shaped how music and movement are taught in classrooms across the United States and around the world.

Portland Orff honors the memory and beautiful legacy of the incomparable Roger Sams

We were so fortunate to have Roger as a Level III teacher and to experience firsthand the joy, wisdom, and light he brought to our Orff community. A true treasure in humanity has been lost.

Roger was a beacon of hope, peace, kindness, and love. Simply being in his presence brought a sense of warmth and calm to the heart. His music, his teaching, and the love he shared touched so many lives. His light will continue to shine through the countless educators, students, and friends who were fortunate enough to know him and learn from him.

We leave you with the words of one of his most beautiful and uplifting canons, a message that feels especially meaningful today:
