The thing we want to prevent may be the road God used to give us our hearts desires. One of my favorite stories from Confessions by Saint Augustine.

Most of us decide our doubt disqualifies us. Jesus’ words about John disagree. Doubt can be good if it brings us into conversation with God. That is what John did. He sent his doubt to Jesus, and Jesus answered it. It is true that without faith it is impossible to please God. But faith was never the absence of questions. It is what you do with them.

Today I sat through a great seminar addressing different views of Christian perfection. As I listened to some of the ways Christians think about sin, something became increasingly clear to me: some of the unhealthiest views of sanctification and salvation are built on the narrowest understandings of sin.

Part 2: Someone asked me to make a series about the books that reflect what I believe today. I think I’ll eventually get there, though that list might be harder to put together.

But that’s not quite what this video is.

These are the books that moved me. Books that gave me new language, challenged assumptions, and became consequential steps on the road to where I am today.

That doesn’t mean I agree with everything in them now. Some I might read very differently today. But each one gave me something I needed at that point in my journey.

And there are enough books that mattered along the way that this series may end up taking two or three videos.

Thanks Pete Enns for writing The Bible Tells Me So. I’m not prepared to say it was God-ordained that this book entered my life exactly when it did, but “providential” feels appropriately vague. 😂

Excited to share this with you all next spring.
