"When I talk about the importance of norms it's because we need that context. Data alone does not necessarily become interpretable…Norms help us understand what's realistic. Benchmarks like state summative tests and proficiency cut scores help us set goals to get to what is meaningful."

Dr. Karyn Lewis, VP of Research & Policy Partnerships at NWEA, sat down with math teacher Kailey Rhodes to talk about how RIT scores are used, what trends she thinks are important for teachers to incorporate in their planning, and why new norms for MAP Growth were needed.

“MAP Growth didn’t just give us numbers—it gave us a system." Al Forsan International Schools had years of MAP data and were ready to build a unified, systemwide approach to using it across campuses. For them, “understanding the data” was just the beginning. The result wasn't just higher achievement. It created a sustainable model for continuous improvement.

Learn how data routines, early literacy insights, and shared accountability elevated instruction, strengthened student ownership, and improved achievement for 11,000 learners.

Healthy MTSS systems have shared expectations for what high-quality learning looks like across classrooms and schools. If rigor, access, or outcomes depend on the classroom a student walks into, the system is signaling inconsistency instead of coherence.

Here’s what school leaders should know about anchoring MTSS in Tier 1: http://spr.ly/6005B8paT5

When MTSS becomes something we use after students struggle, we’ve already drifted from its purpose. The real work of MTSS is not adding more structures or refining labels. It is protecting the instructional core so that every learner experiences both access and challenge as part of the same system.
