After-School Programming Never Sounded So Good - Portland Mercury 05/14/2026

We’re incredibly honored to have Electronic Music Club featured in Portland Mercury this week ❤️

Over the past five years, EMC has grown into a program that helps students explore music production, songwriting, synthesis, and creative technology through hands-on learning in schools across the Portland area.

We’re so grateful to our students, families, instructors, school partners, and PTAs for helping us build such an amazing creative community.

Special thanks to Portland Mercury and Kendall Porter for the thoughtful feature.

Students in Electronic Music Club spend a lot of time working in Lives’s Session View, and it ends up being one of the most powerful ways to understand how music actually works.

Each column represents a different part of a song. Drums, bass, chords, melody. Instead of thinking about music as one big thing, students start to see how these pieces fit together and interact.

Using Launchpads, they can trigger and combine these parts in real time. It turns into a hands-on way to explore timing, arrangement, and structure, almost like building a song out of Lego pieces.

One of my favorite parts is that it pulls students away from the screen a bit. They are still using professional software, but they are playing the music with their hands, making decisions in the moment, and hearing the results instantly.

It is creative, interactive, and a really fun way to start thinking like a producer.
