September classes are here at Rose City Guitar! 🌹

This month we’re diving into everything from Alicia Keys’ soulful “If I Ain’t Got You” and Jim Hall’s blues phrasing to Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon,” Buffalo Springfield, Wheatus, Queens of the Stone Age, Black Sabbath, and more.

We’ll be exploring 7th chords, 6/8 grooves, chord tones and the blues scale, layered guitar arrangements, power chords, melodic fills, alternate tunings, palm muting, vibrato, syncopated rhythms, and heavy riff-based playing—with something for players across a wide range of styles and experience levels.

Whether you’re just picking up an instrument or you’ve been playing for years, our small-group classes are designed to help you build real skills in a supportive, community-focused environment while learning music you actually want to play.

With classes capped at just 5 students, spots are limited and tend to fill quickly.

August Metanoia Series line up! This will be the last month of the Metanoia series this summer, so come out and support local and touring artists one last month with us until 2027! Join us Saturdays from 12–2pm at the Rainbow Road on Ankeny — this is a weekly live music experience featuring incredible local and touring artists sharing original music and the stories behind it.

We didn’t get crowned… but we did make the final.

We’re incredibly honored to be named a Top 3 Finalist for Best Music School in Portland by Willamette Week

Considering we just celebrated our 3-year anniversary in Kernside in June and were up against some Portland institutions that have been at it for decades, we’re feeling pretty lucky to have made such a strong connection. ❤️

Each week, we feature two artists who play songs and tell stories of change and transformation to the neighborhood. Please stop by and support these artists and enjoy some sweet tunes. Three years ago, this incredibly passionate 15-year-old walked into Rose City Guitar Company with a guitar and a drive to learn.

This past weekend, at 18 years old, we stood side by side and performed The Duel from METALOCALYPSE : DETHKLOK together at Bloom Out Loud. We recorded this video together the weekend before the show.

Watching students grow into confident musicians is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching. I’m so proud of how far he’s come, and this performance reminded me how much I enjoy teaching Shred Techniques. We learned both parts in class, trading Toki and Skwisgaar until we had them down.

Huge thanks to Brendon Small and Nili Brosh for sharing their playthrough videos—they were an incredible resource while we learned this piece. 🤘

Also, Emory is looking to join/start a heavy metal band in Portland, OR. He doesn’t have social media, but if you’re interested in working alongside him hit us up so we can connect you!
