Redefining Parent Involvement in Portland's Public Schools

At Community and Parents for Public Schools of Portland, we believe that public education is one of the cornerstones of democracy.

04/30/2026

If each of us chips in what we can (anything helps) we can create an actual system of mutal aid for our public schools. We ALL need the extra support and resources right now. Let's lean in together.

It's PPS Giving Day and our community is showing up for the students of Portland Public Schools!

The Fund for PPS exists to fund supportive, district-wide systems for student success and we need your help! Your donation today goes directly to student success opportunities across the entire district.

Please give today!

School districts throughout Oregon are contending with major budget deficits, including Portland Public Schools. Facing a $50 million shortfall, the district has already shortened this year’s school calendar and is now considering school closures.

"This is not a Portland Public Schools issue,” Andrew Scott, who was first elected to the Portland Public Schools board in 2019 and served until last year, said. “If it was one district, you could say, ‘Oh something is going on in that district we need to look at.’ But it’s not. It’s very widespread through all corners of Oregon—which points to a systemic funding failure.”

Despite what some say is a dire financial situation, state legislators declined to tap into emergency education funding. Governor Tina Kotek said any increased funding needs to come with accountability measures for improved student outcomes, but educators and parents argue Oregon's school funding model is what's led to poor outcomes.

This is not just district mismanagement; It is a statewide issue.

Join PAT, PFSP, CPPS and community members to advocate in Salem! Speak to legislators and demand additional funding from the education stability fund, that they fully fund education and fully decouple from the federal tax cuts for the wealthy. RSVP HERE: ttps://bit.ly/salem32

TOMORROW 2/23!

Community + Parents For Public Schools will convene at the Capitol to talk to legislators. Our message is clear:

We envision an Oregon where every public school is fully funded and equipped to provide quality education. A state where fair tax policies translate directly into student success, community prosperity, and a brighter future for all.

On this Valentine’s Day, here’s our love letter about our nation’s public schools! ❤️

Public schools serve many purposes. They prepare students for the workforce or higher education, and to be informed participants in our democracy. They provide child care, meals, transportation, health screenings, counseling, and access to sports and the arts. They are community centers, polling places, and emergency shelters. At the root of all of this, our public schools exist to serve the common good.

Parents for Public Schools (PPS) was founded over 30 years ago by a group of parents and community members in Jackson, Mississippi, who believed in the power of public schools. Since then, PPS has grown into a nationwide organization with chapters and partners from coast to coast. We have spent decades helping people understand how to advocate for and strengthen our public schools, and at a time when public schools have come under attack, we believe our work is more important than ever.

Last year, the federal government temporarily froze funding for our schools and even considered a 27% cut to Title I, which provides crucial funding for schools in low-income communities.

But thanks to calls and emails from people like YOU, Congress recently passed a spending bill with NO cuts in education funding! Click here to thank members of Congress for supporting public education because we don’t want them to consider cuts like this ever again! https://bit.ly/3OrEQN4

We’ve got a lot in store to continue fighting for public schools in 2026, so please click here to learn more about how you can get involved! https://bit.ly/4rWaUHE
