Thank you to our amazing Facilities Team! With over 6 acres to maintain, there is never a dull moment at MSB. Over the summer they tackled countless projects inside and out. Each classroom boasts 1000 square feet of indoor space, as well as 1000 square feet of outdoor classroom space! There are garden work parties today and tomorrow for families to lend a hand. It takes a village to maintain all of the beautiful spaces we enjoy at MSB.

Maria Montessori would have turned 156 today. Not only does her visionary work continue to inspire people to work together and create schools based on her discoveries. Her profound work also continues to inspire people to come together to create communities like ours at MSB, where families and educators collaborate to raise children with her principles as a guide. The Salmon Classroom is an outdoor classroom shared by our three Elementary classes, from first through sixth grade. When a child wants to work in the Salmon Room, they simply go outside. Choosing where to work seems like a small thing, but making that choice several times a day, for six years (or nine if they started at 3 years old), is how a child develops the skill of managing their own focus and attention.

Come say hello tomorrow at the Cedar Mill Farmers Market, 9 to 2, in the Safeway parking lot off Cornell and Murray.

We'll be raffling off these tote and bottle packages to five lucky winners.

There will be coloring pages and possibly some impromptu lessons for the children. Parents will receive a free three hour Montessori 101 seminar while the children are coloring 😆 (don't say we didn't warn you!).

When children have the freedom to choose their activities, Maria Montessori observed, they naturally concentrate. After a teacher presents a new material to a child, that child can choose that activity (aka work) whenever it is available. Children in the 3-6 year old age range love to repeat activities to gain a sense of mastery. What skill is your child learning to master?

In Maria Montessori's book, To Educate the Human Potential, she wrote, "Since it has been seen to be necessary to give so much to the child, let us give him a vision of the whole universe. The universe is an imposing reality, and an answer to all questions. We shall walk together on this path of life, for all things are part of the universe, and are connected with each other to form one whole unity. This idea helps the mind of the child to become fixed, to stop wandering in an aimless quest for knowledge. He is satisfied, having found the universal centre of himself with all things."
Based on her research of child development and observations, Dr. Montessori noticed that children around the age of 6 were developing an insatiable curiosity. She discovered how to present information to elementary children; from the biggest possible picture (the Universe!) to the smallest details.
