Patricia “Pati” Lerma’s journey is so powerful 💛
After once sitting in Oregon classrooms as a newcomer, she is now a first-grade teacher in the Canby School District, and the 2026 OABE Dual Language Bilingual Education Teacher of the Year.
“Dreams do come true when we believe in ourselves, when we work with determination and perseverance,” Lerma shared. “Especially when we love what we do.”
Pati teaches in a K–6 dual language immersion program at Trost Elementary.

We are now accepting applications for elementary and middle school Dual Language Immersion Teachers for the 2026-2027 school year! Submit your application to our pool posting and get hired ahead of the curve.
Candidates must hold or be eligible to hold an Oregon teaching license with an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and/or Bilingual Spanish endorsement. They must also be fully bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English.
The goals of dual language immersion programs are to develop bilingualism & biliteracy, academic achievement, and cross-cultural competencies for all students.

MENTE Student Scholarship — Application Closes February 27, 2026
The purpose of the Mente Scholarship is to encourage and provide Latine males the opportunity to further their academic and technical potential as they prepare to become future leaders. Selected scholarship recipients will be awarded a one-time $1,000 scholarship for higher education. Mente will award high school seniors and/or current college students who plan to continue furthering their education. This event is a great networking opportunity for interested dual language candidates.

Education Leaders for Oregon’s English Learners (ELOEL).
