Yesterday we had our 5th and final Songbird Rainbow Bridge ceremony for our graduates. But this time all of the children walked over the bridge. We have been talking about how this is a ‘big bye’ and have been singing “make new friends”.
‘Big Byes’ are bittersweet but I am so grateful for the community that has risen out of the wellspring of care and idealism that formed Songbird 5 years ago, and I know that those values will continue in different forms wherever we end up✨🌸🌈

I made the difficult decision to close our doors at the end of July. Songbird has been a labor of love and is my dream school, a school that I dreamed of for over a decade before opening in fall of 2020. I put everything I had into operating and teaching here for the last 5 years and unfortunately, I am unable to continue.

Please let us know if you have any leads on great schools in SE with openings. I have 7 families looking for care.

Additionally I have 3 stellar teachers and myself who will be looking for work in other schools.

The 5th annual lantern walk was the best one yet💛💛💛💛💛💛

We’re getting ready for our Lantern Walk tomorrow 🕯️✨🍁
This year, Ms Heather made papier mache lanterns with the children with collected leaves. They turned out so beautiful!

Why do we celebrate?
Lantern festivals are celebrated around the world at this time of year to bring light into darkness. India celebrates Diwali, some European countries celebrate Martinmas or the festival of St Martin who is the patron saint of beggars and outcasts, in Thailand they celebrate Loy Krathong and Yi Peng, and in China they celebrate the autumn full moon. We love thinking about these parallel traditions as a way to unite our humanity✨

What a busy week! Yesterday we celebrated Halloween at school with costumes and pumpkin carving.
And then today, two of our Latino families helped us to create an Ofrenda for dia de Los mu***os. We learned about how Ofrendas should have one of each element: fire, earth, water,and air. We also learned that the Ofrenda should have favorite food or drinks of our loved ones who have passed to give them nourishment on their long journey.
And then we made Pan de Mu***os with Mariana!

Back in spring we planted peas and sunflowers around our bamboo house. The peas are long gone but the sunflowers are blooming! What a beautiful way to mark the changing seasons💛
