I went for a hike in Washington state and captured this moment, experiencing a time and place in nature. Understanding that we’re all not *in* nature when we’re hiking, but that we *are* nature, and this environment is what shaped and gave rise to us, has helped me better accept myself and humanity, warts and all.

Results from a recent clinical trial comparing Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) with a common drug therapy (escitalopram) for treatment of those with anxiety disorders suggest that MBSR is just as effective as drug therapy, and without risks of dependence and other side effects. If you're exhausted by your work; If focus is impossible; If you have difficulty reading or getting to sleep, then it might be time to work on your mental game.
Attention is a muscle and it can be overworked. The solution to a small flabby muscle isn't just rest. You need to work it. You need to build it. And your studies and work won't do this for you.

So many people start a mindfulness meditation practice without clear guidelines and goals because they haven’t been provided with any. I understand why this is the case — the knowledge gained through meditation is experiential and hard to describe with language. There are also rich histories of meditation in other cultures in other times that can translate poorly to the present. There are so many who expect mystical experiences from the start, or have an idea of a concept like ego death, that can be confusing and disruptive.
So I’m leaving a few sign posts here that beginning meditators might look for in the first few weeks, months or years of practice.
