With a lot of tennis players unable to hit as regularly as they used to, I hope they are at least still watching some good tennis on tv. Sometimes it can be difficult learning from watching the pros because of the fast paced nature of the modern game. Here are a few tips to make learning from the comfort of your own couch a little easier.
1. Watch players that you admire.
If you hit a one handed backhand, watch someone with a good one handed backhand. If you are a counterpuncher, watch someone speedy. I’m not saying to avoid watching other players, but if you’re looking to learn some tips, it’s best to find players that play a little more like you do!
2. Focus on the player at the bottom of the screen.
Normally when I watch a match just for the entertainment value, I’ll watch both players and follow what they do with the ball. However, if I’m looking at the way a player hits a certain shot, I’ll watch only them. By focusing on the player at the bottom of the screen, you get a first person view of how they hit and move. (e.g. If you’re a righty watching a righty, their forehand will be on the right side of the screen.)
3. Take note of how the point ends.
Sometimes a player starts hitting a lot of a certain type of winner or error. By studying the specific shot that is causing those results, you might be able to notice small details that explain why the shot is so successful or not.

I hope my fellow tennis players stay safe for the next few weeks. It’s frustrating to have to keep shutting down indoor recreation, but we can make it through these difficult times together.

The forehand is usually one of the first shots people learn when they start playing tennis and there are a lot of great tips out there to help you hit a good forehand.
In this video I want you to take a look at three things:
1. First comes footwork! Notice how Edmund adjusts and aligns his right foot so that his hitting arm is not too close and not too far from the incoming ball. He then plants his right foot and it allows him to rotate his hips to generate pace and spin. This also helps him maintain good balance and posture.
2. Many top players these days start with a high take back, usually head height or higher. This lets them make adjustments to meet the ball at the right height. It can be difficult to judge how the ball is going to bounce, so you need to give yourself time and space to adjust properly.
3. Once he has observed how the ball is going to bounce, he drops his racket to the appropriate height and begins the unloading/uncoiling process. This is the point at which he also decides if he wants to hit the ball flatter or with more spin.
TL;DR
1. Adjust and align your foot to the ball. (Right foot for righty’s, left foot for lefty’s)
2. High take back.
3. Adjust and align your hitting arm to the height of the bounce.

I just want to thank everyone who has liked this page and welcome them to begin this journey with me!
If you’re wondering how I came up with the name “Super Effective Tennis”, it actually comes from Pokemon. As a lot of you may already know, certain types of Pokemon are super effective against others and I thought it was a great analogy for certain aspects of the game of tennis. It’s our job as tennis players to figure out what is super effective against our opponents when we are playing a match.
I will do my best to update this page regularly with advise on how to improve your game. Please let me know what kind of content you would like to see!
