I have room for 2 more students this fall if anyone is looking for tutoring. Happy to do a free meet and greet at a local library or by zoom and answer any questions.

Learning to type with dyslexia can be a struggle. I am proud to be an ambassador for Touch Type Read Spell, which is the only program out of 7 we tried that worked well for my own son. This program is designed for people with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD and other learning disabilities. It follows an Orton-Gillingham based progression, and while accuracy is measured, timing is NOT. This takes the pressure off so kids can focus on learning. This program has been easy for my son to follow with very minimal supervision. It shows the words on screen and the fingerings, and also reads words aloud so there is multi sensory reinforcement and help with reading if needed. One of the great features is that you can add specific words to be taught, like a child's name or the week's current list of spelling or sight words.

Playing an active role in advocating for what should - and shouldn’t - be in your child’s IEP is so important. Since getting certified in Orton Gillingham I’ve been able to do a much better job advocating for my own son’s IEP goals and accommodations. Learning to use accommodations independently will help him prepare for future college and career challenges. What is Orton-Gillingham Tutoring?

Orton-Gillingham is an approach to teaching that was developed to help anyone who struggles with reading (and spelling). It is multisensory, meaning we use as many of the body's senses as possible to help reinforce learning in different parts of the brain. Orton-Gillingham is a structured approach that teaches letters, sounds, syllable forms, and rules - which is especially important for students who may not intuitively or quickly pick up on these things in traditional classroom settings. Orton-Gillingham is not a scripted program where the same lessons are taught to all students (e.g., Barton Reading, which is based on the Orton-Gillingham methodology). Rather, custom lesson plans are written each week for every individual student, following an established order (progression). Students can move at their own pace - taking as much time as they need, but also moving forward as they are ready. Writing custom lesson plans can be very helpful compared to a more scripted program, both to keep students engaged, and to tailor the time we spend together to meet specific needs. Orton-Gillingham tutoring helps with reading, decoding, spelling, writing and fluency. We typically also include some work toward improving reading comprehension and vocabulary.
