My kiddos love to read “real” books. I’ve made a few small sets of decodable books with cute and engaging pictures and stories for some extra practice for my students. They love to take them home at the end of the day to read to their parents.

While I am teaching my reading groups the other groups have a structured activity, but once completely, they have independent work choices that they select for themselves. This gives them agency in their own learning because they can choose what they want to work on.
Here's an examples of the choices on a given day in my classroom. These choices change every couple of weeks to keep things interesting and at the best level for the class.
Our brand new readers are learning how to decode. And when we are learning something new, mistakes are made. Here is an example of how I corrected a student’s decoding of a word he build with our letter cards.
First, he says it’s the word “snake”. We identify each sound again. This group has only “officially” encountered short vowel sounds, but they are smart kiddos who have observed the long sound being used in many words. So I specify the short sound. Then we sound it out again! He got it! Then we also learned a new word, since “snag” is a new word for this ESL group.
Note: I am still getting used to saying, “that sounds SPELLS /a/“ vs “says”, so next time, I’d say that, as I think it’s more clear for students. We’re always working on getting better! 😅
The letter cards/tiles can be found for FREE on my website or Teachers Pay Teachers. Link is in my bio.
This is a great example of how I use my picture and word matching cards in my reading groups. This has been particularly useful for my ESL students who are still learning English words, while they are learning to read! I can easily assess their blending and decoding skills, but also see which words they are confident with, and which we are still unsure about.
These cards are available in my only store and on my TPT. The resource includes CVC words as well as words with beginning and sending blends.

Hands on practice with CVC words. My kiddos love these little velcro letter mats that I made. This particularly helps my ESL students better identify vowel sounds.
You can find this resource in my online store or my TPT. Link in my bio.

These kiddos are hard at work, learning new irregularly spelled words! Combining the orthographic mapping style of "heart words" with "student agency" because they have several activities to choose from during this center. But they often choose this one because they love to get out the scissors and glue. Win-win for everyone.
You can find this sight word practice sheet bundle in the link in my bio!
Looking for some extra practice with sight words that still aligns with the Heart Word method? Look no further!
I love using this method of orthographic mapping for my students and have seen a big difference with their understanding and confidence with irregularly spelled words.
If you’re new to this method, don’t worry! My bundle comes with a pdf for parents/teachers about getting started with and using the Heart Word method!
